Just a day dreamin’ the other day...

Wonderin’ what it would be like for the rest of my life...

Don’t think I could take it...

So I decided to reduce it to the next five years...

Then I had to make the big decision...

Who do I pick???

And who can I stand to live without...

Amongst my many favorite teams...

Clippers, Lakers, Chargers, Kings, Aztec football...

Once I pick I can’t go back...

For five looooooong year...

You are cordially invited to join me...

And select only one team...

Just one team you can watch and follow for the next five years...

And you have no access to the other ones...

No access whatsoever...

Read the paper, it ain’t in there...

Watch TV...

Just a snowy picture...

Same for that radio station...

It ain’t there either...

Who do you love the most???

Who can’t you live without...

And the others just don’t exist...

For five years...

You won’t even know when they’re playing...

Or not playing...

So...

Imagine the off-season...

The loooooooong off-season...

If you pick a basketball team

You can’t watch the other sports...

Not just your team...

But the entire sport...

Well...

Maybe we could let you watch the other sports...

Or maybe not...

But not your team in that sport...

Is your absolute favorite team in your absolute favorite sport???

Tough choice???

Will it be based on how well that team is playing at the time???

Or will you pick a crummy team in your favorite sport???

I must say...

This is a tough one for me...

Baseball is my favorite sport...

That’s my generation...

But there’s nothing like going to a hockey game...

Or sitting in the stands with my season tickets...

Watching SDSU...

My college football alma mater...

If I don’t pick a college basketball team...

I miss March Madness...

Do I mind missing the Super Bowl???

Or the World Series???

The Stanley Cup...

Could I bear not getting to watch???

The dreaded Pro Bowl???

And...

As with any challenge like this...

There must be an *asterisk...

A disclaimer...

*Your actual mileage may vary...

*Member FDIC...

*If it lasts for more than four hours, call a doctor...

Okay...

One more thing...

Soccer doesn’t count...

You can’t pick a soccer team...

Because most soccer fans are one-sporters...

The wouldn’t miss the other sports any ways...

And that’s not fair to the rest of us...

Does that hurt you soccer fans???

Then fall down and fake an injury...

So...

Who’s your pick???

Are you going for quantity???

162 baseball games???

Or quality???

A four month college football season...

As for me...

I will pass on the Clippers and the Chargers...

I will miss the Clips...

But I can definitely live without the Bolts...

Especially after being Norved to death the last few years...

It’s between the Angels and the Kings...

And if I don’t take the Halos...

What do I do during the summer months???

Hmmm...

I could go to a minor league park???

Does that count???

I’ll count it...

I’m the boss here...

I’ll pass on the Angels...

So the only one left is...

GO! KINGS! GO!

Musings From The Hoodwood 3-5

Will we see Bron do this on an All-Star Weekend???

Greetings from the Hoodwood, where the locals are arranging their schedules around the basketball games. That is what makes this month so great..

Before I get started this week, I wanted to note that I am dedicating this weeks column to the lasting memory of my grandmother Lorene Hare. She passed away 20 years ago on Monday and it’s a rare day that goes by that I don’t think of her or the values she taught me. She is seriously missed

The latest spec sheet is in and things are getting just about as crazy as they always are. I made sure to research all the key games, dates and times everything is up to date. But of course there are things other than college basketball to chat about…really there are!

NBA: Would a million get the big names in the dunk contest?

Magic Johnson wants LeBron to be in the next slam dunk contest. He wants him to participate so bad that he’s willing to offer $1 Million for him to participate. I’m all for LeBron to do more of the dunks that he is doing in warm-ups ad he is saying that he is considering the offer. I think personally that LeBron doesn’t want to risk his big name dunk rep if he lost the contest. Almost like the big boy basketball teams that avoid strong Mid-Majors like Creighton and Butler like the plague unless they have to play them. I  grew up in the era where Jordan, Wilkins Webb, and other big names were sky walking for dunks in the contest. Blake Griffin won the contest dunking over a car, but also Dwight Howard won it as well. I want to see all the big names in the contest and a million dollars need not be a motivator for what should be the NBA’s signature event. I agree with Stephen A. Smith of ESPN’s First Take who wonders why Magic didn’t make this over about a month ago. I think it would have been more interesting that the borring dunk contest that was done this year and that was even with Bearcat alum and noted highflyer James White of the Knicks in it. Big names will draw big ratings and much more buzz.

College Football: Should Penn State get time off for good behavior

Gene Wojciechowski of ESPN raised the question and I think it merits discussion. Penn State’s football team is on probation and other heavy sanctions meted out by the NCAA and the Big Ten for the Sandusky affair. Penn State has been very compliant in its cooperation with the investigations and has cleared out people that were heavily involved. Wojciechowski suggested that with its cooperation should be a reward. Penn State is barred from postseason play and from getting any postseason money that the conference as whole receives. The suggestion is that the year of good behavior and full compliance should be rewarded with a year reduction of their penalty.

I disagree. It seems that Penn State continues to rail as they were the victims of the Sandusky scandal and that they were as much victimized as the young men that were irrevocably damaged by the perverted actions of Sandusky who used the prestige of his station that was afforded to him by Penn State and overlooked if not protected by Penn State. In fact there are still two administrators that have been indicted for their inaction in this matter. Pennsylvania’s governor Tom Corbett is trying to get an antitrust suit filed against the NCAA to get their sanctions thrown out. Penn State trustee Anthony Lubrano has openly raged against the NCAA’s sanctions, telling Wojciechowski in a phone interview. "I think there should be injunctive relief and the sanctions should be removed, period, end of story…And I'd go so far as to say that the NCAA ought to pay us damages for the harm they've caused." He calls NCAA President Mark Emmert “a sanctimonious hypocrite and he have proven me right time and time again." Now there may be some debate on that point but that’s another discussion.

Wait a minute… NCAA pay Penn State??? Is he fuckin’ serious???

Penn State is damn lucky that they didn’t get the so-called death penalty something similar that SMU got back in 1987. I think that what SMU got was well deserved they broke rules, paid players, lied about it, got caught, put on probation and kept on doing what they were doing. They got what they deserved and haven’t been relevant in football since. They’ve only been to a couple bowl games since coming off of the death penalty in 1990. In my opinion, Penn State didn’t deserve the death penalty, as they were extremely cooperative with the investigations that happened in the Sandusky matter and were quick to dismiss some of those that were involved in it. Did they deserve to be punished for the cover up? Yes, harshly. But the punishment is the punishment. It left no room for appeal.  Penn State is used to being the sanctimonious type, the one the clucks it collective tongue at those that they think are not living up to a high moral code. The call it the Penn State way, but the long reign of Joe Paterno bred arrogance and now Penn State has been punished there were some that think that they should be given a free pass or a parole. I think that they should take their punishment and stop carping.

SPEC SHEET 3-5

Vegas baby! Is seems that one of the epicenters of college basketball ahead of Selection Sunday is Las Vegas . No fewer than four conferences are playing their conference tourney championships. The WCC start the fun at Orleans Arena, after they leave the WAC come in two days later on the 13th. Meanwhile the Mountain West start their tourney at Thomas & Mack while the Pac-12 make their first ever tourney appearance outside LA and make their tourney appearance at the MGM Grand right on the Vegas Strip.

Atlantic Coast
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Miami Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State
Work to do: Virginia, Maryland
Skinny on the ACC: Duke salved some its wounded pride by rebounding to outgun the Canes, but Im still puzzled how a 3 point loss knocks Miami off the #1 seed. Im not fond of either Virginia or Maryland since both sport weak resumes, but both have the trump of beating Duke.  The former stays on the working list if only for taking a horrid loss at BC and the latter has been playing raggedly uneven. Maryland however is the weakest of the two working teams.

Key Game:  North Carolina at Maryland Wednesday 7p (ESPN) Maryland needs to beat the Tar Heels in College Park to strengthen their tourney resume.

Projected Bids: 6

Atlantic Ten
Conference Class-Major
Solid: Va. Commonwealth, Saint Louis, Butler

Work to do: LaSalle, Temple

Is Butler in trouble??? The Bulldogs took a nasty beating to VCU and may fall from the rankings as you know the pollsters loath to have multiple non-power conference teams in the rankings. I still think that the A-10 will send 4 teams all of which will be tough outs.

Key Game: Temple at Fordham Wednesday 7p (A-10Net)This is the only time you will ever see mention of the Rams on this sheet, the Owls need to be careful not to look past them to a matchup with VCU.

Projected Bids: 4

Big East
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Syracuse, Georgetown, Marquette, Louisville, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Pitt

Work to do: St. Johns, Villanova, Providence
Big East Skinny: It is well known to those that read this spec sheet that I am Cincy alum, and like a lot of their fans were going to from concerned to worried to downright scared that their beloved team was sliding a slippery slope to the notoriously fickle so-called bubble. Many of those fears were allayed with gutty, gritty win over UConn that was far from aesthically pleasing but finally got them to 20 wins. Finishing strong would still do them good, the same cannot be said for Villanova who may be playing these same Bearcats in the BEast 2nd round for their very tourney lives.  Ive added Providence to the mix who have won 6 of 7 to get to the fringes of the conversation and after they beat the badly fading St. Johns but the Friars are a long, long way from making the solid list unless they win out AND win multiple game at MSG

Key Games: Georgetown at Villanova Wednesday 7PM (ESPN2) The Wildcats need to win this and at least their 2nd round game, which may be St. Johns or Cincinnati) to be safe.

Projected bids: 8

Big Ten
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin

Work to do: Iowa
The word on the Big Ten is: No real changes here over the weekend. The Minnesota avoided a letdown after its monster win over the formerly top ranked Hoosiers with a laugher over Penn State (who had just beaten Michigan) Iowa blew yet another chance to get into the conversation as they got straight housed by an embarrassed Indiana. Though both Michigan & Michigan State are way safe they played a thriller in Ann Arbor and you might see a higher stakes rematch in Chicago in a little over a week.

Key Game: Illinois at Iowa Tuesday 7p (BTN) The Hawkeyes are running out of chances and are getting close to the dreaded win it(the Big 10 tourney) to get in it status

Projected Bids: 7

Big 12
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Kansas, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Work to do: Iowa State, Oklahoma
Skinny from the heartland:  Ive been so willing to give Baylor a chance, even with those hideous day-glo unis…I really have. But when they repeatedly give away opportunities like they do, witness the egregious turnover that turned into a game winning 3 for K-State Saturday. They are now needing to run the table closing the regular season AND get to at least to the semis on Saturday in Kansas City. Not an easy task as they still have Kansas on their docket…good luck. Of the two working teams, Oklahoma has the better resume and after beating fellow working team Iowa State are needing to just avoid anymore bad losses from here on out and it wouldn’t hurt to get to Saturday themselves. Iowa State is in real trouble after getting housed by the aforementioned Sooners

Key Game: Oklahoma State at Iowa State Wednesday 7p (ESPNU) Beating the Pokes in Ames wouldn’t totally save the Cyclones fading chances but they would certainly be a lifeboat.

Projected Bids: 4

Conference USA
Conference Class-Major
Solid: Memphis
Work to do: Central Florida, UTEP, Southern Miss
Oh Say Can You C-USA Spec: The Tigers bounced back strong by downing UCF to stay unbeaten in C-USA They are right now the only team I have going from the this conference but are listed because they are ranked. The working teams have no other recourse than to run the table in Tulsa.

Key Game: Memphis at UTEP 9p Tonight (CBSS) Can the Tigers run the table? Their last real test ahead of the conference tourney is a tough roadie in El Paso

Projected Bids: 1

Missouri Valley
Conference Class-Mid Major
Solid: Wichita State, Creighton
Work to do: Northern Iowa
Missouri Valley Skinny:  I want to know who thought Creighton was in any kind of trouble to get into the tourney? To quote the old Shaggy line “It wasn’t me.” The Blue Jays short-circuited the Shockers before a deliriously happy home crowd in Omaha to secure the top seed in the MVC tourney in St. Louis, nicknamed “Arch” Madness. Im thinking that both the Shockers and Blue Jays while both safe could very well be a rematch this coming Sunday

Missouri Valley Conference Championships: March 7-10 Scottrade Center, St. Louis

Key Game: Illinois State vs Northern Iowa Thursday 8:35p (ESPN2) If the Panthers want to entertain any hopes of dancing they had better get past an upset capable Redbird squad.

Projected Bids: 2

Mountain West
Conference Class-Major
Solid: UNLV, San Diego State, Colorado State, New Mexico
Work to do: Boise State
Spec from the Mountains:  The Lobos are locked into the #1 seed here and are marking time to Selection Sunday. There is a messy morass of teams at 9-5 or 8-6 behind them and are jostling to stay on the other side of the MWC bracket to avoid these same Lobos till a Vegas finale on the 16th. I think the Rebels and Rams are relatively safe the Aztecs have the suddenly hard charging Broncos pushing up on them. Could the MWC send more teams than the fabled SEC??? If the Broncos get to ten wins in the MWC I think that they go solid.

Key Games: Boise State at UNLV 10p(CBSS) The Broncos are going from pesky to persistent and are getting really hard to ignore, a win here in Vegas further strengthens their resume.

Projected Bids: 5

Pacific 12
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Oregon, UCLA, Cal, Arizona

Work to do: Colorado, Arizona State
Spec from the left coast:  Just when I thought the line at 5 was being cheap, Colorado falls badly at Cal, and Arizona State continues to fade badly. The latter now has a 3 game skid and is behind USC who is trying to get enough wins to be NIT eligible. I hold the line at 5 and the Buffs have a golden chance to get on the solid side of the ledger

Key Games: Oregon at Colorado Thursday 9p (ESPN2). The Buffs would be undeniable if the beat the conference leaders.

Projected Bids: 5

Southeastern
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Mizzou, Florida
Work to do:  Ole Miss, Arkansas, Alabama, UK
Spec is Down South: Every year you have a conference  that has a down year, last year it was the Pac-12, this year it’s the SEC who likes to think that they should be a lock for 6 or 7 berths every year. I think that they will get only 4 and only deserve 2.  I should know better than to bank on a shaky Wildcat squad. They got housed in Fayetteville and despite being 2nd in the SEC are still very, very shaky. Also very shaky now are Ole Miss after an inexcusable loss to cellar dwelling in state rival Mississippi State. But they are still on the sheet which is more than I can say for some of these teams. Im taking Tennessee and LSU off the list totally after both took bad beatings the latter an extremely ill-timed loss to sad sack Georgia.

Key Game: Alabama at Ole Miss 9p Tuesday (ESPNU) The Tide and Rebels are teetering badly and need to stockpile as many quality wins as they can get.

Projected Bids: 4

Western Athletic
Conference Class- Major
Solid: Louisiana Tech
Work to do: New Mexico State, Denver
Spec on the WAC: The Bulldogs are still ranked but not quite home free for the #1 seed beating the Aggies in Las Cruces is the last thing that stands in front of them. They still have to run the table to assure themselves a bid, I don’t think that they have the resume weight to get an at-large.

Key Game: Louisiana Tech at New Mexico State Thursday 9p (ESPN3) The Bulldogs can clinch the WAC title outright and make the Saturday game against Denver academic

Projected Bids: 1

West Coast
Conference Class- Mid Major
Solid: St. Marys, Gonzaga
Work to do: BYU
West Coast Spec: The Bulldogs are the nations top team and with the now ranked Gaels are basically waiting until the 9th to face whatever worn out victim in the WCC semis. Who ever they face will have  played at least two games in the staggered WCC tourney. The thought here is that the Bulldogs and Gaels will be facing off on Monday for the Conference title but are in no danger of not getting a dance ticket. Though BYU has a bye through to the quarters but will likely have to face St. Marys in the WCC semis and will need to beat them and likely Gonzaga to get a bid, I don’t think that they can.

Key Game: TBD vs BYU Friday 11:30 (ESPNU)Either San Diego or Pepperdine will be the Cougars first opponent in the WCC quarters.

West Coast Conference Championships: March 6-9, 11 Orleans Arena Las Vegas

Projected Bids: 2

There are others in the mix to be sure. (Projected winners in parentheses) Teams from the always dangerous Colonial (Northeastern) and Big South (Charleston Southern) always are in the mix and can send multiple teams. Of course the champions from the following conferences get an automatic bid: Amer. East (Stony Brook), Atlantic Sun (Florida Gulf Coast), Big Sky (Weber St.), Big West (Long Beach St.), Horizon (Valpo), Ivy  (Princeton), MAC (Akron), MAAC (Loyola-MD), MEAC (Norfolk St), Northeast(Robert Morris), Ohio Valley (Belmont), Patriot (Bucknell), Southern (Davidson) , Southland (S.F. Austin), Sun Belt (Middle Tennessee), Summit (Western Illinois), and SWAC (Southern)

Since this is still spec, nothing here is solid and we haven't even brought up the possibility of upsets. But those never happen, right?

Next Spec Sheet:  Mar 8

Sports News of the Weird: How a team had to forfeit  a game for doing the Harlem Shake

I guess Im getting old, I don’t pay attention to the latest fads. Such is the norm when you watch lots of sports. I was still trying to get used to the whole Gangham Style dance craze but I find that Im way behind. There is a new craze called the Harlem Shake, it reminds me of the flash mobs that pop up here and there. For the uninformed the Harlem Shake is a dance craze that starts with someone dancing around like a fool with a helmet on while others in the room go about their business blithely unaware. After about 15 seconds when the bassline drops, the scene changes and everyone is dancing like a fool to their own beat. With the ease of internet productions, videos like these go viral. The latest harmless craze, but the Nyack/Tappan Zee hockey team took the craze a bit too far…watch the video for yourself…

Stupid? Yes. Insipid. You bet. The video is pretty harmless until you see the part with the guy doing the nasty with the hockey stick and the dude prancing in at right with the sock on his business… High school kids or not, this was just another sobering reminder of the consequences of stupid acts that get online.

Phat Dap

As much as I dog Kobe, this dunk was so sick they had to call the health department

Head Slap

As much as I hate to delve into political stuff here in Hoodwood, this one just cant be passed up. Dennis Rodman went to North Korea and apparently got buddy buddy with the Korean Premier Kim Jong Un…He was seen drinking, feasting and cooling out with the dictator. Rodman was part of a group traveling with the world famous Harlem Globetrotters.  Nevermind the long long list of human rights oppressions that North Korea has perpetrated on its citizens. Nevermind that they have openly talked about bombing the US. Rodman has a new buddy in Jong Un and he says that he is waiting for President Obama to call. I hope that he aint putting off anything waiting. Rodman is totally clueless about what this dude has done and is doing to his people and that he is not doing any good for the tensions between the US and North Korea.

Thats the View from the Hoodwood...Until Next Post Fellow Sports Fans!

Jimmie Johnson has another trophy to add to his collection

Greetings from the Hoodwood where it seems that schedules have your humble scribe running all over the place.

Danica winning without winning..how is that possible?

As shown by the pic above, Danica Patrick did NOT win the Daytona 500  she finished 8th but she has gotten much more respect than she was initially given after making the jump from Indy Car to NASCAR. The detractors called it a pub stunt and openly predicted that Patrick would embarrass herself. Those critics were forced fed a huge slice of crow when Patrick first won the pole then drove capably for the whole race, never dropping below 11th and was as high as 3rd with 5 laps to run. Johnson was the winner of the race, but Patrick may be the long term winner of grudging respect. As Mary Lou Retton stated when she became the 1st woman on the front of a Wheaties Cereal Box. "Watch out Big Boys!"

Are the Lakers, fakers?

Kobe Bryant has laid down a guarantee that the Lakers will make the playoffs. This in spite the Lakers horrid start and currently being 9th in the West 3 games behind the 8th spot. They did themselves no favor by getting run out of the Pepsi Center by the Nuggets. The Lake Show shot 55% and still lost by 11. You wont win many games when you give up 94 points inside the arc, allow 50 points in the paint in the first half!  The Lakers are just not that good a team and with Pau Gasol looking like he might not be hale for any foreseable future. Kobe Bryant can only carry this team so much, the ancient Steve Nash and the inconsistent Dwight Howard not being able to carry their share, the Lakers are a team in trouble. Consider that they have only 1 win against the current top 8 teams in the West in 14 road games. The Lakers think that they are playoff quality but as we already know there is only one true playoff team that plays in Staples and that team isnt wearing Purple.

The thing about February its so short, yeah its only 2 or 3 days shorter than most months but the days seem to fly by, and the course of many of college team gets decided in these short 28 days. The next spec sheet will be the 1st of March, figuratively and literally. Heres where its gonna get good!

Atlantic Coast
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Miami Duke, North Carolina, North Carolina State
Work to do: Virginia, Maryland
Skinny on the ACC: Miami finally got beat, by a hot shooting Wake Forest team and in other years that would be seen as a bad loss, since the Demon Deacons are likely going nowhere but a short drive from Greensboro to Winston-Salem after they get run out of the ACC tourney. But the loss was timely and since they were looking to be the first non-North Carolina based school to run the ACC table them losing wasn’t a bad thing. I moved the Tar Heels back to the solid line. I don’t think that this will be the first time in nearly 40 years that both them and their fellow blue-blood Kentucky will miss the tourney

Key Game:   Duke at Virginia Thursday 9p (ESPNU) The Cavs are running out of chances to make a statement win.

 Projected Bids: 5

Atlantic Ten
Conference Class-Mid Major
Solid: Va. Commonwealth, Saint Louis, Butler

Work to do: LaSalle, Temple

The Billikens belong! You better believe that after they went to Hinkle, took the fight to the Bulldogs and came out with a hard fought win. They are on the solid list and I welcome anyone who wants to tell me why they shouldn’t be there ahead of the more celebrated Rams &  Bulldogs. I think that there is one invite left on the table in this conference between LaSalle and Temple. I still think that despite the Owls win over the Explorers that LaSalle has the inside track…for now

Key Games: Detroit at Temple Tonight 7p (ESPNU) A game that was postponed from back in December suddenly has huge resume heft for both teams

Projected Bids: 4

Big East
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Syracuse, Georgetown, Marquette, Louisville, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Pitt

Work to do: St. Johns, Villanova
Big East Skinny: The team that is now in the most trouble is my beloved Bearcats are probably the happiest team to see a month turn after a nightmare 2-5 month that saw them go from ranked to rank in a hurry. With St. Johns now ahead of them in the standings, the Bearcats are looking up at a bunch of teams. Their resume still has weight on it but stumbling down the stretch is not something the tourney committee likes to see.

Key Game: Georgetown at Connecticut Wednesday 7p (ESPN2)  UConn is thoroughly enjoying being a spoiler. They’re not going to NYC for the BEast tourney so they are playing these games like a tourney and the current conference kingpin Hoyas better be careful.

Projected bids: 8

Big Ten
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Illinois, Wisconsin
Work to do: Minnesota, Iowa
The word on the Big Ten is: The Bucks are the team that no one wants to deal with coming down the stretch now,  there is no real change in the solid line but both the working teams are in real trouble, Iowa took a horrid loss to Nebraska and may have deep sixed their chances short of a deep Big Ten tourney run. The Gophers have solid numbers but these numbers are getting poorer everytime they get housed like they did against the aforementioned Bucks. The Gophers are teetering on the brink of dropping off the list

Key Game: Indiana at Minnesota Tonight 7p (ESPN) The Gophers could get a mammoth resume boost if they ambush the top ranked Hoosiers at the Barn

Projected Bids: 7

Big 12
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Kansas, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Work to do: Iowa State, Oklahoma
Skinny from the heartland:  The Cyclones had the Jayhawks all zapped but a dicey call at the end of regulation just took the wind out of the team and the fans in Ames The Jayhawks pounded the Clones in the overtime period. The Jayhawks are still in first and the Cyclones missed a prime chance to move to the solid line. Moving the wrong way off the working line is Baylor who have lost three straight. Oklahoma is the only team that is still teetering

Key Game: Oklahoma at Texas Wednesday 9p (ESPN2) If the Sooners want to stay in the conversation, they’d better not stumble to their rivals.

Projected Bids: 4

Conference USA
Conference Class-Major
Solid: Memphis
Work to do: Central Florida, Tulsa, Southern Miss
Oh Say Can You C-USA Spec: The Tigers clinched the C-USA regular season title outright with a thorough beating of the Golden Eagles and are bulletproof. The Golden Eagles are the question mark here, they will need to win out and likely get all the way to the Saturday morning final to get serious consideration. That and there would need to be few upsets in the power conferences.

Key Game: Memphis at Xavier 7p Tonight (ESPN2) An intriguing late season non-con matchup could give more weight to the Tigers as look for a higher seed.

Projected Bids: 1

Missouri Valley
Conference Class-Mid Major
Solid: Wichita State, Creighton
Work to do: Northern Iowa
Missouri Valley Skinny:  The Shockers have a single game lead and were the only MVC team to win a bracketbusters game as they beat Detroit. I think that they are the team to beat heading into Arch Madness, the Bluejays are better than UNI and I think barring a bad loss between here and a probable finale against the Shockers should be good to go. The Panthers need to make things happen and fast to garner a bid.

Key Game: Creighton at Bradley Wednesday 8p  (FSN) The Bluejays had better not look past the Braves to a regular season finale against Wichita State.

Projected Bids: 2

Mountain West
Conference Class-Major
Solid: UNLV, San Diego State, Colorado State, New Mexico
Work to do: Boise State
Spec from the Mountains:  Quick who has more ranked teams the SEC or the MWC…the MWC has two ranked to the SEC’s one. The Lobos are now two full games up on the rest of the conference and are making plans for after St. Patty’s day for sure.  The Rams are still solid but are blowing chance to solidify their berth. The Aztecs and Rebels have crossed the 20 win threshold and I think are just about safe. Air Force has been replaced by the Broncos who are making a late dash to be a 5th team coming out the MWC but I cant see that realistically happening. They might ruin the Aztecs and Rebels chances though.

Key Games: San Diego State at New Mexico 4p (NBCS) The Rams look to avenge at 5 point loss in Albuquerque and move into a 1st place tie in the MWC. Nevada at San Diego State Saturday 6p (NBCS) The Aztecs had better be careful not to look past a mediocre Wolf Pack to their big game in New Mexico

Projected Bids: 4

Pacific 12
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Oregon, UCLA, Arizona
Work to do: Colorado, Cal, Arizona State
Spec from the left coast:  The solid teams remain just that, but Im not sold on both Cal and Colorado going and Arizona State went right back to the working line after taking an inexcusable loss to Washington. That was the same Husky team that had come off getting housed in Tucson and looked all sorts of lost. Im staying on 4 teams from this conference going, and Im going to need some serious convincing to change my mind.

Key Games: Oregon State at Oregon Thursday 11p (ESPNU). The Ducks are holding on to the Pac-12 lead but host their in-state rivals who would like to pull a mammoth upset

Projected Bids: 5

Southeastern
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Mizzou, Florida, Alabama, UK
Work to do:  Ole Miss, Arkansas
Spec is Down South: Mizzou missed a golden chance to further damage the Wildcats tourney chances and as a result, I reluctantly move the Wildcats back to solid. Im sorry folks the Wildcats are still tied for 2nd in the SEC and have the same record as the Tigers. Like the Pac-12 Im not convinced that this conference deserves more than 4 bids and its being generous with the SEC.

Key Game: Florida at Tennessee  9p Tonight (ESPN) The Gators hasd better be careful heading into Knoxville, the Vols are still angling for a good seed in the SEC tourney.

Projected Bids: 4

Western Athletic
Conference Class- Major
Solid: Louisiana Tech
Work to do: New Mexico State, Denver
Spec on the WAC: The Bulldogs are now ranked as a 24-3, 14-0 record is getting a little too hard to ignore, even in the weak WAC. Getting a chance to shine on national TV the Pioneers opened some eyes with a solid win over Northern Iowa and are still right in the mix. New Mexico State is running out of opportunities ahead of the WAC tourney to impress, struggling to beat a so-so UTEP in the Bracketbusters didn’t help their cause, but they are still in the mix.

Key Game: Utah State at Louisiana Tech Thursday 8p(ESPN3) After much noise and campaigning for some respect the Bulldogs are ranked (albeit at #25) lets see how they handle it against a sneaky good Aggie squad.

Projected Bids: 2

West Coast
Conference Class- Mid Major
Solid: St. Marys, Gonzaga
Work to do: BYU
West Coast Spec: The Bulldogs are enjoying their highest ranking in school history and the only fear is marking too much time between now and their first tournament game. Not in the WCC but in the NCAA tourney against a #16 seed. They have the creds to get a #1 seed. St. Mary’s is getting pretty hard to deny after downing Creighton, the Gaels could have as many as 28 wins before they face the Bulldogs in the WCC title game. Can you give me concrete reasons why they shouldn’t go? BYU is running out o chances to prove they belong but then again guess who is coming to dinner on Thursday

Key Game: Gonzaga at BYU Thursday11p (ESPN2) Forget the games over the weekend this would be a real bracketbuster, the Cougars could make a party crashing statement win if they upset the Bulldogs.

Projected Bids: 2

There are others in the mix to be sure. (Projected winners in parentheses) Teams from the always dangerous Colonial (Northeastern) and Big South( Charleston Southern)  always are in the mix and can send multiple teams. Of course the champions from the following conferences get an automatic bid: Amer. East (Stony Brook), Atlantic Sun (Florida Gulf Coast), Big Sky (Weber St.), Big West (Long Beach St.), Horizon (Valpo), Ivy (Harvard), MAC (Akron), MAAC (Loyola-MD), MEAC(Norfolk St), Northeast(Robert Morris), Ohio Valley (Belmont), Patriot (Bucknell), Southern (Elon) , Southland (S.F. Austin), Sun Belt (Middle Tennessee), Summit (South Dakota St.), and SWAC (Southern)

Since this is still spec, nothing here is solid and we haven't even brought up the possibility of upsets. But those never happen, right?

What this throwback have to do with anything? See this weeks Head Slap!

Greetings from the Hoodwood, where the locals are getting really tired of winter…Punxsutawney Phil has been Hoodnapped and will be released after the temps climb past 60.

College Basketball: Shakeup at the top…or is it?

With the latest college poll that came out on Monday for the first time in five weeks the #1 team has not changed. Indiana rebounded from a last second loss to Illinois to thrash Ohio State and for the time being remain the number #1 in the nation. Are the Hoosiers the nations best team? I'm not even going to touch that one.  But the mess at the top isn’t going to get any better especially with a hard charging Miami squad rising all the way to #3 after another nationally televised beatdown of another ACC old guard in North Carolina. I think its time to face facts that the Hurricanes are a legit team. Jim Larranaga has quietly built a rough and tumble team that will be a tough out in the tourney. Shane Larkin is a facilitator cut in the same mold that his MLB Hall of Fame dad Barry is, a tough fearless leader that leads by hardworking example. This is a fun team to watch and are 10-0 in the ACC for the first time in school history. This team could be dancing deep into March. Also in the top 5 is Gonzaga enjoying its highest ranking in school history. I know the wonks that would like a dominant team to emerge or a name team to be the bully are having a fit. But me for one I love it, this is why I love College Basketball  More speculation will follow as the Spec Sheet will be a regular feature in the Hoodwood for the next few weeks leading up to the NCAA tourney

College Football: Will the JoePa mess at Penn State ever end

The Paterno family decided to finally issue their formal response to the Freeh report that more or less ended the coaching era of Joe Paterno at Penn State. Jay Paterno has been making the talk show rounds vociferously defending his fathers honor and name. Ive been long on record with my thoughts about this mess. All the Paterno family is trying to do is try to repair their deceased patriarch’s name, I understand but the problem I have with that is Paterno did most of the damage to his own name when he could have been lionized for being the type of no-nonsense person that wouldn’t even tolerate that sort of shit happening anywhere near his squeaky clean program. But instead Paterno said nothing and there are times where saying nothing is just as bad or worse. I have nothing to say about that excrement that will spend the rest of their worthless life behind bars. I feel bad for the kids who were caught in the mix not only the ones who were abused but the kids playing for Penn State and had to transfer out or are staying with the prospect of never playing in the postseason. The sanctions really haven’t taken effect either. The recruiting and lack of depth will soon catch up with the Nittany Lions and the effect of what happened will really take effect. Just when we thought we could start to try to put this whole Penn State mess behind us the Paternos come out trying to stir it all up. Its hard to let it all go.

NFL: Vick staying in Philly for now.

For a while it was looking like Michael Vick was going to be heading out of Philly, especially with Andy Reid getting the gate. With new coach Chip Kelly looking to bring his man Dennis Dixon as the future and Nick Foles being a capable backup , Vick and his sizeable lengthy contract looked to be the odd man out with many speculating where Vick would land. But the Eagles threw everyone (your humble scribe included for a loop) when he signed an one year $10 million dollar contract to replace the $100 million contract that he signed in 2011. The clock is now ticking on Vick and it’s a good bet that he will be heading out of Philly after the 2012 season. The questions of how tight a leash he will have, where he will land after the upcoming season and who Chip Kelly will go to long term afterwards will be something that will be hotly debated on Broad Street and locales in Philly for the next few months.

MLB: King Felix gets paid…or does he?

The talk of MLB as pitchers and catchers prepare to report to spring training was the stunning  long term deal that the Mariners inked with “King” Felix Hernandez to lock up MLB’s best young pitcher. The extension added to Hernandez’s current deal and would add up to a mind boggling $175 million deal. Its widely thought that Hernandez is the cornerstone of a young Mariners team and many lauded the Mariners for locking up their ace. But there now seems to be conflicting reports here, the Mariners are now haggling with Hernandez and are questioning the health and durability of his elbow and with that much money on the line you can be sure that the Mariners want to make sure that their investment wont break down and need something like Tommy John surgery or have a shredded elbow that takes numbers off his fastball or the bend off his criminal curveball.  You can bet that other big ticket pitchers like Justin Verlander, David Price and Clayton Kershaw are watching this deal with interest, because you already know that a big deal like this will be used in comparison when it comes time for these pitchers to negotiate their next respective deals.

Spec Sheet 2-12

As I mentioned it is a hot mess in the college ranks, though the #1 team stayed the same for the first time in better than a month the juggling continues

Atlantic Coast
(Conference Class-Power)
Solid: Miami Duke, North Carolina State,
Work to do: North Carolina, Virginia
Skinny on the ACC: Miami is about as legit as they come as they dealt the Tar Heels a frightful beating on Saturday. The

Key Game: North Carolina at Duke Wednesday 9p You really don’t need an explanation why this is the featured game. History, tradition and usually a memorable game but the Heels could always use a big win over their hated neighborhood rival.

Projected Bids: 5

Atlantic Ten
Conference Class-Mid Major
Solid: Va. Commonwealth, Butler

Work to do: Saint Louis,  UMass, Xavier, LaSalle, Dayton
The A-10 Spec is: The Rams and Bulldogs are pretty safe for now and are jockeying for the top spot. The interesting scrum is right behind them where Billikens and Minutemen have crept into the picture. Xavier, Lasalle and Dayton still have work to do. The Flyers took a tough loss at home against Temple.

Key Games: Charlotte at Butler Wednesday 7p  The Bulldogs will have their hands full trying to deal with the 49ers.

Projected Bids: 3

Big East
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Syracuse, Georgetown, Marquette, Louisville, Notre Dame, Cincinnati, Pitt

Work to do: St. Johns, Villanova
Big East Skinny: The Irish and Cards played an epic last Saturday but it was for little worth other than the pure basketball value of a titanic struggle. The Hoyas, Orange Golden Eagles are marking time till heading to MSG next month. Pitt is making a nice move up the rankings while the Bearcats are picking a bad time to go into a dry spell are falling fast in the standings. Especially with the committee looking to eliminate big name teams from the conversation. The Johnnies failed again to make a big name signature win. The Wildcats need a big win…

Key Game: Villanova at Cincinnati Tuesday 7p (ESPN3/FSO)  Speaking of needing a big win, the Wildcats head to Cincy to face a reeling Bearcat squad that has had trouble defending its home turf.

Projected bids: 7

Big Ten
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Indiana, Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Illinois, Wisconsin
Work to do: Minnesota, Purdue
The word on the Big Ten is: The Hoosiers remain the country’s top team while the other teams in the solid column remain that way. The Illini moved into the solid category with their thrilling win over the Hoosiers and backing that up with a win at Minnesota. With that loss, the Gophers have fallen out of favor. Im sorry the Gophers have taken one too many losses in a short span and are in real danger of missing the tourney after such a promising start

Key Game: Wisconsin at Minnesota  Thursday 7p (ESPN) Don’t expect any flowers and candy exchanged between these long time bitter rivals, the suddenly vunerable Gophers needing a win over the hot Badgers.

Projected Bids: 6

Big 12
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Kansas, Oklahoma State, Kansas State
Work to do: Baylor, Iowa State, Oklahoma
Skinny from the heartland:  Kansas has fallen off badly but are still in no danger of missing the tourney as they housed Kansas State and are by virtue of their sweep hold the conference lead. Keep an eye on the Pokes who are playing solid as of late. Oklahoma is solidifying its tourney credibility with a great win over the Jayhawks and not letting down by following that with a solid win against TCU. If this keeps up they will get harder to deny a move to solid category.

Key Game: Oklahoma State at Texas Tech Wednesday 7p (ESPNU) The Pokes need the win to keep pace with the Jayhawks and Wildcats

Projected Bids: 5

Conference USA
Conference Class-Major
Solid: Memphis, Southern Miss
Work to do: Central Florida, Tulsa
Oh Say Can You C-USA Spec: Memphis remains unbeaten with an impressive win in Hattiesburg (Much love to our peeps down in Southern Miss picking through the mess after the twisters there over the weekend.) Im keeping the Golden Eagles in the solid line for now. Im not real sold on Central Florida or Tulsa neither of which have a real signature win as of yet. But the former has a real chance to do so…

Key Game: Central Florida at Memphis Wednesday 8p (CBSS) If the Knights want to show that they are for real, they could do no worse than knocking off the conference unbeaten Tigers in Memphis to turn some heads.

Projected Bids: 2

Missouri Valley
Conference Class-Mid Major
Solid: Wichita State, Creighton
Work to do: Indiana State
Missouri Valley Skinny: Just when I was all set to hype the BlueJays they take a really dumb loss to Illinois State in Omaha. That got them knocked out of the top 25 and now the Shockers and Sycamores are tied with the Jays for the top slot in the MVC.

Key Game: Indiana State at Missouri State Tuesday 7p(ESPN3) The Sycamores had best be careful, if they want to stay in the MVC race they can ill afford bad road losses. The Bears have the capability to pull the upset.

Projected Bids: 2

Mountain West
Conference Class-Major
Solid: UNLV, San Diego State, Colorado State, New Mexico
Work to do: Air Force
Spec from the Mountains: The Lobos got thumped in Vegas and the standings just got all sorts of tight. The Rams are now ranked and move to the solid line, as do the Aztecs and Rebels. Air Force will stay on the working line until they can wake from their slump.

Key Game: San Diego State at Colorado State Wednesday 10p(CBSS) The Rams are now ranked and have a tough visitor coming in first thing.

Projected Bids: 4

Pacific 12
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Oregon, UCLA,  Arizona
Work to do: Stanford, Arizona State
Spec from the left coast: OK, ok. Ill leave the Bruins alone after their thrilling win over U-Dub. They followed that up with a fairly easy win over the Cougars and Ill move them to the solid line. I m still not sold on either the Cardinal or Sun Devils. The former is caught in a traffic jam of 6-5 teams in the conference that are not legit. Ill give the latter a break for now as long as they don’t take a dumb loss to the lowly Utes.

Key Games: Arizona at Colorado Thursday 11p (PAC12N). The Buffs can get noticed if they knock off the conference co-leaders.

Projected Bids: 3

Southeastern
Conference Class-Power
Solid: Mizzou, Florida, UK
Work to do:  Ole Miss, Alabama
Spec is Down South: As I chide the Bearcats for falling on hard times, I grudgingly give the Wildcats their props. Their steady improvement has pushed them into the top 25 and subsequently on to the Solid line. The Hogs are gone from the sheet entirely for not only failing to follow their win over Florida but getting housed by lowly Vanderbilt. As it stands Ole Miss is the better bet of the working teams to move up.

Key Game: Alabama at Georgia Tuesday 9p (ESPNU) The Tide needs to start banking wins to break clear of a messy pack.
Projected Bids: 4

Western Athletic
Conference Class- Major
Solid: Louisiana Tech
Work to do: New Mexico State, Denver
Spec on the WAC: Not much changes here, the Bulldogs are still the bully here with a weak non-con schedule that gets them no love. The Aggies are still stalking 1 ½ games back. The new entry is Denver a team that is leaving the WAC after only a season. But the Pioneers have played well and are in position to make a move late.

Key Game: Denver at Utah State Thursday 9p (ESPN3) The Pioneers will learn what its like to be the hunted as they head to a tough road venue in Logan.

Projected Bids: 2

West Coast
Conference Class- Mid Major
Solid: St. Marys, Gonzaga
Work to do: BYU
West Coast Spec: The Bulldogs (I refuse to call them Zags) are top 5 and are way safe. The Gaels are getting close to bulletproof themselves. In any other season, BYU would be in the conversation but are still light years away from it. They need to keep winning to stay close to the rampaging top tier teams

Key Game: Gonzaga at St. Mary’s Thursday 11p (ESPN2) Mammoth WCC showdown  and a lively rivalry will get a rightful national TV stage, the Gaels will be just about bulletproof with a win while the Bulldogs will make more of a case of a top seed in the tourney.

Projected Bids: 2

There are others in the mix to be sure. Teams from the always dangerous Colonial and Big South always are in the mix and can send multiple teams. Of course the champions from the following conferences get an automatic bid: Amer. East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big West, Horizon, Ivy, MAC, MAAC, MEAC, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Sun Belt, Summit, and SWAC projected bids from these conferences will be posted here starting February 21st

Since this is still early spec, nothing here is solid and we haven't even brought up the possibility of upsets. But those never happen, right?

PHAT DAP HEAD SLAP

Phat Dap

I know this happened better than a month ago, but I have to give dap to Nerlens Noel of UK for this dunk.

Give new meaning to “nuts on ya neck”

Secondary Dap to Kobe Bryant who got on a fan who used a homophobic slur on twitter. It appears that someone made a reply of “You’re gay” to another tweeter who was a fan. Bryant replied quickly on his twitter feed "Just letting you know@PacSmoove @pookeo9 that using "your gay" as a way to put someone down ain't ok! #notcool delete that out ur vocab." If you will recall, Bryant got fined last year for using a similar slur last year and getting caught by cameras doing so. Bryant was reminded of this and replied “Exactly! That wasn't cool and was ignorant on my part. I own it and learn from it and expect the same from others." You know im no big Kobe honk, but he deserves dap for a smart response to a childish act.

Head Slap

As big a Michael Jordan as I am (his 50th birthday is Sunday) I am not having the talk of how many points would the Hall of Famer score playing today. MJ is 50 he wouldn’t play well, as much as I loved his play. I winced when he came out of retirement in 2001 to play with the Washington Wizards and painfully remember Kobe Bryant punishing him with jumpers and repeated drives to the hole in a game late in his career, saying “You should’ve stayed retired” choosing to remember his last shot as a Bull as the end of his career. I hate the talk of the wonks that say he could play and be a force today and head slap to the wonks that wont let him stay retired.

Whew! Lot to say this week. Keep an eye out for the video blog on YouTube. Until Next Post Fellow Sports Fans!

What does this shot have to do with the Phat Dap??? Stick around and see

Greetings from the Hoodwood where your humble scribe hates only a couple things, this cold ass-weather and being sick. Unfortunately, I got a big dose of both and it sucks big time.

Leading off: Get ready for the Har-Bowl. The Harbaugh brothers lead their teams to the Big Game

What is it about splitting the baby? I am exactly .500 after 10 playoff picks. And I got one of the two pre-season picks right for the Super Bowl as the Niners rallied from 17 down to stun the Falcons in the Georgia Dome. I think that Falcons fans were already planning for New Orleans after the home squad jumped out to a 17-0 lead six seconds into the 2nd quarter. Colin Kaepernick and the Niners offense were just about non-existent in the 1st, gaining a grand total of 2 yards…wait…check that. That’s four too much. The -2 yards. You would have been among a select few that thought that the Falcons were done; I even openly stated that the Niners were another score from being blown out. The Niners came back, to cut the lead to 3 but the Falcons ground out another touchdown. Figuring the game was going to get much much uglier. I dipped out and went to my homie, Bumpy’s new crib. I turn the score back on about 45 minutes later and was stunned to see not only had the Niners crawled back into the game. They had the lead! But the Niners had the ball and were driving for what looked to be another epic comeback score. But needing to get all the way to the end zone this time, the Falcons sputtered at the Niner ten with a 4th down pass being broken up to seal the game. I was an ill coda for the brilliant career of TE Tony Gonzalez who was great in the game catching all 8 passes thrown at him for 78 yards and what would be the final Falcons score. He has confirmed that he will retire; I’m fully expecting to see Gonzalez and Lewis getting the call to Canton in 2017 and go in at the same time.

Speaking of Lewis it seemed that the Ravens had their hands full with another visit to Foxboro in a rematch of the AFC title game from last year. It seemed that Pats were going to grind out another win. But the Ravens held the Pats to a late FG after trailing 10-7. The Ravens shut the Pats out in the 2nd half and again defying common held wisdom. Joe Flacco again played big time throwing for three scores in the 2nd half as the Ravens rolled to a 28-13 win. So now we will have 2 week s solid of talk about the Harbaugh brothers. Both are coaching in their 1st title game, the Niners are appearing in their 6th Super Bowl but first since 1994.

PHAT DAP/HEAD SLAP

Phat Dap

To Butler’s Kevin Schwarz who drilled a half-court shot to win $18K in the ESPN game day challenge. Schwarz’s shot was done in front of a frenzied crowd at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The made shot ended an 0 for 32 streak of missed shot. Having had seen the 1994 shot by Cory Clouse at Cincinnati’s Midnight Madness. That is a hard shot to make and with a national audience watching, that is some shot.

Check it Out

Head Slap

To Manti Te'o, I know its piling on But the longer that the All-American doesn’t come clean the longer it looks like he’s hiding something. Katie Couric will have the first formal live sit down interview with Teo in the next few days. I just don’t like the fact that Teo is trying to hide facts and play like he was the victim.

I will post more later. I’m pretty sick. I’m hoping that I can battle through this and come out quick.

Until Next Post Fellow Sports Fans
