An important message?? NFL owners and players smarter than we think?? Gabbers is instant replay needed in Baseball?? This and more inside this edition of Rants and Raves.
Before we start, this message just came in….
Now back to our regularly schedule blog….
Maybe the NFL and NFLPA aren’t as stupid as we thought. If you look at it, players are moving to other teams. Not just fringe players, but stars have been moving. This should help the NFL generate tons of money in many ways.
- Ticket sales will go up because teams have been attempting to make themselves better (some of have done better than others).
- Team merchandise. Player jerseys will be a big seller as well as posters.
- Ratings will go up because the non-fan will want to see what all the fuss was all about. They will check out “the product.” Maybe getting new fans interested.
So maybe the players and owners know more than what we thought??
With all the blown plays occurring in baseball this past week, maybe baseball needs to have instant replay. Maybe let the managers of team have a red flag, like the NFL, and give them 2 chances to review plays. Or, how about what certain college football conferences do, review each play while the teams are in a huddle, if there is a bad call the referee in the booth will overrule a bad call.
Gabbers, I ask you to decide…..
Are the Pirates for real?? They were actually buyers?? Yep you read it right. First the team picks up first baseman Derrek Lee, who was batting .246 with 12 homeruns and 41 RBI’s and a good defense player, then the Pirates picked up outfield Ryan Ludwick for a player to be named or $$$. Ryan was batting .238 with 11 homeruns and 64 RBI’s. Nice addition for Pittsburgh. The team doesn’t give up anything major for Lee or Ludwick.
Another surprise as MLB trading deadline ended was the New York Yankees not doing anything. It was the first time in 13 years that they didn’t pull off a trade at the deadline. They have a lot of talent in the minor leagues. In a way, I am glad. There are several pitchers that will produce when they arrive at the major league level next year. No need to give them up.
NFL teams that did well in the free agent signings, and or trades, were New England, Philadelphia, New York Jets and Atlanta.
In case no one is paying attention, MLB and MLBPA contract expires at the end of the season. Football, Basketball and Baseball, I hope baseball players and owners are watching what happens/happened with the other leagues.
Wow, Bubba Smith passed away at the age of 66. We remember him today as an actor who starred in 5 of the 6 Police Academy movies as Moses Hightower. But, he was the top overall pick in the 1967 draft with the Colt. He also won a Super Bowl in 1971. He was one of the best pass rushers in the game. Bubba also had an outstanding college career at Michigan State. His #95 was retired by the Spartans in 2006. He led Michigan State to a 19-1-1 record from 1965-1966.
