The Philadelphia Eagles face the Washington Redskins this Sunday in a game that can only be described as an encounter where their 2011 season is on the line. If this team has any Super Bowl aspirations, a fifth defeat could cripple their dreams.

Philadelphia is fighting history this weekend as well. If they finish the weekend at 1-5, the team must realize only the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals reached the playoffs after starting a season as poorly.

That Bengals team started the season 1-6 before rattling off seven straight wins behind Pro Bowl players like Lemar Parrish and Bob Trumpy. They would lose the first playoff appearance in franchise history against the eventual champion Baltimore Colts.

The offense has yet to really click for the Eagles yet this season. While ranking third best in the NFL in total yards gained, they have been struggling to consistently score touchdowns and rank 11th in total points scored. The offensive line, an issue that mostly has haunted head coach Andy Reid since he took the job in 1999.

It has to burn Reid's heart at this issue. He has won 60 percent of the 197 regular season games with Philadelphia, which makes him the winningest head coach in franchise history, but blocking is an area he is supposed to be an expert in.

Reid played offensive tackle in college, then got into coaching immediately upon graduating after his 1981 senior season. He coached the offensive line until the end of the 1996 season. His Eagles teams have produced just five Pro Bowl blockers since he took the helm, with only one that Reid drafted and developed, not something the head coach probably foresaw.

Philadelphia looked smart last year by trading quarterback Donovan McNabb and going with Michael Vick in his place. Vick, though known for a mobility that made him the NFL's top rushing yards leader by a quarterback in league history last week, has taken a tremendous pounding in 2011 because of Philadelphia's offensive line woes.

Vick has battled injuries and missed time this year, something the Eagles thought they had a contingency plan for by signing free agent Vince Young. Young has been to the Pro Bowl quarterback twice since being drafted in 2006, but he was not healthy enough to play when Vick went down.

Blocking isn't the only reason Vick has suffered. Though he is still learning how to be a pocket-passer, Vick has a propensity to hang onto the ball too long and take many unnecessary sacks.

The Eagles rushing attack is led by an excellent 5.8 yards per carry average from halfback LeSean McCoy, yet the Eagles still are ineffective in short yardage situations where a powerful running game between the tackles is needed. None of Reid's teams have ever excelled in this critical area.

If the offensive trenches weren't enough of an issue for Reid, his defensive lines haven't been much better in his Eagles career. Philadelphia has had a habit of getting tiny pass rushers who were weak against the run, often contributing to the reason Reid has yet to win a Super Bowl despite 119 regular season victories and nine playoff appearances in his previous 12 years.

Jeff Lurie has been a great owner since buying the Eagles in 1994. He is known for his loyalty as much as the generosity he has displayed to charitable causes. Reid's coaching staffs have shown a solid continuity for the most part, which can be seen with defensive coordinator Juan Castillo.

Castillo has been with the Eagles since 1995, holding jobs in many areas. After coaching the offensive line since 1998, he moved over to defense this year. Critics are not only pointing to Philadelphia's poor run defense, others are looking at a secondary that has yet to meet expectations.

After spending a ton of money to sign free agent cornerback Nnamde Asomugha, as well as trading for Pro Bowl cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Lurie bit the financial bullet by retaining the services of Pro Bowl cornerback Asante Samuel. Not only has the secondary given up way too many touchdowns on so few passing attempts, ranking 30th in that category, the group is not creating turnovers.

The Eagles tried to address the long-standing issue in their trenches by signing two high profile free agents in Jason Babin and Cullen Jenkins. While the duo has already racked up a combined 12 of the teams 16 total sacks, they are also a reason the team ranks 30th in rushing yards allowed and last in rushing yards per attempt up the middle of the defense.

The team took a gamble this year by going with a bunch of underwhelming or unproven linebackers this season, and are losing big so far. Not only has the group mostly stunk in run support, they have been even worse in pass defense.

The fact the Eagles safeties haven't played great hasn't helped either. Kurt Coleman has struggled at free safety, which hurts more due to the fact Nate Allen has yet to play as well as he did in his 2010 rookie year.

Despite Lurie shilling out millions to Vick, Young, Asomugha, Babin, Bryant, Steve Smith, Ronnie Brown, and others, the results have yet to be met by a group trying to get acclimated with each other on the fly in a season truncated because of a players strike. Yet history shows pouring money into players does not equate to championships.

Whether it is the 2010 Miami Heat, the Ted Stepien Era with the Cleveland Cavaliers, or even the 2011 Boston Red Sox, the examples are plentiful. Sometimes the angle of spending a lot of money works, as George Steinbrenner showed by winning seven titles in his 37 years of owning the New York Yankees.

The season is not yet lost for the Eagles, especially if they defeat a division rival that Reid has triumphed over 15 times in 24 attempts. The Redskins, who are coming off their bye week, need this game to stay on top of the NFC East while trying to increase their lead with their second division win in as many attempts.

Washington will probably attempt to run the ball down the Eagles throats with their trio of excellent running backs. If they succeed, Philadelphia could see their 2011 season begin to end as the game clock expires.

The City of Brotherly Love is starving for a football title in the NFL, having not seen their team win a championship since 1960. They are known as passionate fans, so a let down by their beloved Eagles may lead to a large insurgence of fans calling for the firing of Reid.

With their season on line, let alone the Eagles careers of guys like Reid and Castillo, the team has their backs against the proverbial wall and must begin to come out swing like Philly legend Rocky Balboa. Hopefully their thrust will not be fictional like Rocky was.

Yooooooooooo! For doze of yous dat forgots about me, I iz 7thStoneFromTheSun, da distant cuzin of 3rdStoneFromTheSun Yo, I did suck las weak in my procrastinashuns. I went 7-6, and I now iz 46-31 overall.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees should enjoy facin a dissappointin Buccaneers defense, whose seasun mite be on da line hear.

Saints 34 Buccaneers 23

Minnesota Vikings @ Chicago Bears

Da Dolphins basically got Matt Moore and Sage Rosenfels as dere quarterbacks, which aint awesum. Both is sound reserves at best, but we will sea. I tink Miami better run rookie halfback Daniel Thomas 25 times against dat suspect Jets defense.

But da Jets will put 8 in a box cuz dey dont respect da Dolphins quarterbacks, which iz da rite move.

Jets 23 Dolphins 14

Ray Lewis to retire?? If they build it, will they come?? ScottJax77 is hurting?? This and more in this edition of Rants and Raves.

Where to start, what to say.

I want to send my condolences to B-Dub?s family on the passing of your brother. My thought and prayers are with you and the family

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There is one more month to go for the start of the Jacksonville Jaguars and most of the other NFL teams. I have been to one Jaguar practice this season and this is what I have learned. Beer is $3, hot dogs $2, soft drinks $1 and candies $1 during the practice sessions. Why can?t these prices be like this during the regular season.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Looks like ScottJax77 needs hip replacement surgery. Doctor is making arrangements now. The only requirement that I made is that the surgery has to be after August 28th. That is my fantasy football draft day. I?ll be out of action for about three months. I should miss one day of Rants and Raves. I?ll keep you guys and gals posted.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Did you read about the 7-year-old that was signed by Real Madrid. He goes by the name of Leo and was signed to Real Madrid?s youth academy.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Maybe its me but doesn?t Rex Grossman and Tim Tebow look alike??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Twelve-time Pro Bowl thug linebacker Ray Lewis said he will retire if the Ravens win the Super Bowl this season. Why doesn?t he just retire. He might be a great football player, but, what a waste of a human being. He is my number one pick for the Thug Hall of Fame.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If they build it will they come?? The city had the Rams and the Raiders, and both teams left, Rams to St. Louis and the Raiders back to Oakland. Yet, the NFL has thrived without a team in Los Angeles. Now the City is trying to lure an NFL team to a new stadium. The LA City Council unanimously approved a nonbinding agreement with developer Anschutz Entertainment Group to tear down and relocate a wing of the Convention Center and make room for a 72,000-seat stadium, tentatively named Farmers Field.
The council's 12-0 vote was expected after a council committee last week gave its OK to the financial framework of the deal. One of the stipulations of the agreement is that the NFL put a team with a long-term commitment in the new stadium. In other words: no team, no stadium.
This is what I can?t understand. Los Angeles couldn?t support one NFL team now this bozo, councilman Bill Rosendahl, threw his support to the proposal and even suggested that maybe one NFL team in LA isn't enough. "I want a team, and maybe a second team, that will come to this town," he said. "Why not? We're a great city, and we deserve it."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The Eagle?s, in their quest for a Super Bowl Title sign former New York Giants receiver Steve Smith to a one-year deal.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How many of you have the Philadelphia Eagles playing the New England Patroits in the Super Bowl. I do. Who do you think is going to be in the Super Bowl??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Did someone tell the Pittsburgh Pirates that they aren?t suppose to be in the running for a playoff spot?? They sure have headed south.

Til Next time

Have a great week

Please Release Me, Let Me Go: 10 NFL Players Who Should Be Traded By Tuesday
Category: NFL
Tags: Michael Vick NFL Kyle Williams Steven Jackson Lee Evans Steve Smith Rashean Mathis Nnamdo Asomugha Vernon Davis Michael Bush

Vernon Davis, San Francisco 49ers

SEATTLE - SEPTEMBER 12: Tight end Vernon Davis #85 of the San Francisco 49ers rushes during the NFL season opener against the Seattle Seahawks at Qwest Field on September 12, 2010 in Seattle, Washington. (Photo by Otto Greule Jr/Getty Images)

There is no bigger waste of talent in the NFL right now.

Despite having the speed of a wide receiver, Davis has spent much of his career anchored to the line of scrimmage blocking instead of split out in the slot.

Though he is an excellent blocker, his skills set and athleticism is way above other great receiving tight ends like Shannon Sharpe and Antonio Gates.

If Davis had been used right, since being drafted in 2006, he would be on his way to Canton instead of having just one Pro Bowl so far.

At this rate, he will only have a good career like Brent Jones, Monty Stickles, and Ted Kwalick instead of the great one he should be having.

The best thing to do is trade Davis to a team that wants him, knows how to use him, and has a quarterback who can get him the ball.

It won't happen yet, but it is a shame so see so much talent being wasted and handcuffed from greatness.

Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers

NEW ORLEANS - OCTOBER 03: Steve Smith #89 of the Carolina Panthers in action during the game against the New Orleans Saints at the Louisiana Superdome on October 3, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Chris Graythen/Getty Images)

Carolina has already said they won't trade him.

Mainly because he is their best player, but he is also the only guy on the roster who can consistently get open.

Smith is a dynamic player who has gone to four Pro Bowls and led his team in receiving the past six years and eight out the past nine seasons.

He has also stood out returning kicks and punts.

The Panthers are rebuilding, appearing to be several years away from being pertinent again. It would be nice to see the 31-year old wind down his career on a winning team trying to get a ring.

Michael Vick, Philadelphia Eagles

JACKSONVILLE, FL - SEPTEMBER 26: Quarterback Michael Vick #7 of the Philadelphia Eagles celebrates after throwing a touchdown pass in the first quarter against the Jacksonville Jaguars at EverBank Field on September 26, 2010 in Jacksonville, Florida. (P

Even if he doesn't take another snap this year, it has been a successful season for Vick.

Making his first starts since 2006, he showed he had actually improved his game. He was thrown into action because starter Kevin Kolb was hurt. He was hurt himself just three weeks later, and now Kolb is showing everyone why the Eagles let the legendary Donovan McNabb go so he could play.

It may be a gamble trading Vick, because another injury to Kolb would hurt the team if he were not still with the team. Yet his contract expires after this year, so getting something for him, as opposed to nothing, may be more logical.

Teams like Buffalo, Cleveland, Minnesota, Arizona, San Francisco, and Carolina need help at quarterback now, or will need help next year. Vick is a three-time Pro Bowler who has shown a new wrinkle to his exciting game. One that he could bring to a team in need of some life offensively.

Bernard Berrian, Minnesota Vikings

NEW ORLEANS - SEPTEMBER 09: Bernard Berrian #87 of the Minnesota Vikings at Louisiana Superdome on September 9, 2010 in New Orleans, Louisiana. (Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images)

He gets $5.5 million a year and is basically a fourth receiver now.

When Sidney Rice returns, he will get buried deeper.

With six catches for 42 yards, and two passes thrown to him the past two games, Berrian has truly become a forgotten man.

He was signed in 2008 as a free agent by the Vikings in 2008, which he did by averaging over 20 yards per catch. Since then, it has gone downhill for the man expected to stretch the opponents seam. He averaged 11 yards on 55 receptions last year, and it probably will not improve with the arrival of Randy Moss.

Trading the soon-to-be 31-year old makes the best sense, because Minnesota is an old team that will need to start rebuilding next year. Getting any kind of draft pick, as well as dumping his salary, would help the team immensely.

Michael Bush, Oakland Raiders

OAKLAND, CA - OCTOBER 10: Michael Bush #29 of the Oakland Raiders runs with the ball against the San Diego Chargers at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on October 10, 2010 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images)

Timing has not been kind to him the past few year.

After a breakout junior year in college, the 6'1" 245 lbs running back seemed destined to be a first round draft pick in the NFL. Then he broke his leg early in his senior year, missing the rest of the season.

The Raiders gambled on him in the fourth round of the 2007 draft, knowing he wouldn't be able to play until 2008 after having a steel rod put in his leg.

Since then, he's played 34 games, but has carried the ball just 254 times despite averaging 4.6 yards per carry.

Darren McFadden is the Raiders main running back, and has been excellent so far this year.

Unless Bush gets traded to a team needing a workhorse, like Green Bay, he is destined to keep averaging just over seven carries a game.

If given the chance, he could be a 1,000 back.

Steven Jackson, Saint Louis Rams

ST. LOUIS - OCTOBER 03: 3: Steven Jackson #39 of the St. Louis Rams carries the ball in the second half against the Seattle Seahawks on October 3, 2010 at Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Elsa/Getty Images)

He has run for over 1,000 yards in five of his seven years, and appears headed to a sixth.

He is the leader of a young team, and the backbone of the offense.

So why trade the two-time Pro Bowler?

Though he hasn't shown any signs of slowing down after almost 2,000 career touches, the longevity of a typical NFL running back is under two seasons.

The Rams are rebuilding, so Jackson would command good draft picks for his services. If he was dealt to a winner, he also could have a shot at earning a ring.

It is something he probably will not get with the Rams.

Rashean Mathis, Jacksonville Jaguars

SAN DIEGO - SEPTEMBER 19: Rashean Mathis #27 of the Jacksonville Jaguars on defense against the San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium on September 19, 2010 in San Diego, California. (Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)

Not only have his number of tackles drastically decreased each season since 2007, Mathis has missed 12 games over that time too.

He still is the Jaguars top cover guy, but his production has slipped since his 2006 Pro Bowl year.

A change of venue on a winning team in need of a cornerback could reinvigorate Mathis.

Nnamsi Asomugha, Oakland Raiders

OAKLAND, CA - JANUARY 3: Nnamdi Asomugha #21 of the Oakland Raiders sits on the bench against the Baltimore Ravens during an NFL game at Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum on January 3, 2010 in Oakland, California. (Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Getty Images)

He isn't going anywhere, though Oakland just announced every player is available for trade.

Quite simply, he is the best cornerback in the NFL for at least the past three years.

If the Raiders are serious about trading anyone, some team should make a serious inquiry about this 29-year old stud about to enter his prime.

Kyle Williams, Buffalo Bills

ORCHARD PARK - OCTOBER 19: Kyle Williams #95 of the Buffalo Bills moves on the field during the game against the San Diego Chargers on October 19, 2008 at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Orchard Park, New York. The Bills defeated Chargers 23-14. (Photo by: Rick

He has been steady and reliable since the Bills drafted him in 2006, and he has started pretty much his entire career.

A wide body at 6'1" 300, he has been effective mainly against the run.

A year removed from a career best 66 tackles, Buffalo switched this year from a base 4-3 defense to a 3-4 defense. Williams was moved to nose tackle, instead of pulling an Albert Haynesworth by crying and pouting about it.

He has responded with 25 tackles and a sack after five games this year, which is an excellent pace.

Though Buffalo may not part with their best defensive lineman, and quite possibly their best defensive player, Williams would help any team in any system.

Lee Evans, Buffalo Bills

ORCHARD PARK, NY - OCTOBER 10: Lee Evans #83 of the Buffalo Bills makes a catch against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Ralph Wilson Stadium on October 10, 2010 in Orchard Park, New York. (Photo by Rick Stewart/Getty Images)

The term underused comes to mind when Lee Evans name gets mentioned.

He is a top-notch deep threat, with three seasons of catches over 83 yards, but he has just two years of over 1,000 in his seven years.

The biggest reason has been the poor play of Bills quarterbacks, a theme that continues on this year.

Most of them have struggled to get him the ball.

Though just 29-years old, his speed declining is not as far away as maybe thought.

His going to a team with a solid quarterback could invent a rebirth for him, considering he has never really had one since the Bills drafted him in the first round in 2004.

If Buffalo is willing to part with Marshawn Lynch, possibly their best running back, for draft picks, they may be willing to do the same with Evans as the team continues to rebuild.
