I know that I said I was going on vacation, but I decided to post one more blog before I take my break. I found some rather interesting reading today in my local newspaper the Flint Journal on the record the Wings will break tonight if they defeat the Dallas Stars at Joe Louis tonight. It was a rather revealing interview by Ansar Khan who writes for Mlive.com.

I found it rather amazing that one of the quotes from Mike Babcock goes like this: "This group has surpassed what I thought we were. We're a better team than I thought we were, and so we reset your bar and you keep pushing to be better." Hell if he  wants to know the  truth, they have already surpassed how good I really thought they was going to be this year with all the changes that they have made due to retirement and the death of Ruslin Salei in the tragic plane crash last fall. Also for the record, they absolutely stunk during the month of October when they could have been beaten by any team in the world during that month then something happened, Mike Babcock called them out......

This team has always taken pride in defending their home ice, because in order to be a successful team you have to win there and break even on the road. Here are some stats from the current streak. last season they 21-14-6 at home with a 3.10GAA; this season they have already surpassed their win total from a year ago, and are allowing 1.73 goals against which is second only to St.Louis' 1.61 at home. The Red Wings have outscored their opponents 81-30 during this streak, and I would like to thank Tim's Rangers for continuing to push the Wings for the President's Cup this year by remaining consistent with 77 points to the Wings 78. Without this motivation, I believe the streak may have ended a while ago.

Even though this is a sign of a real good team, the Wings need to get a little better on the road, even though they only have a few games left on the road this season. You have to be able to win a few on the road during the playoffs in order to win playoff series, good teams cannot rely on home dominance in order to win Lord Stanley's Cup.

ScottJax reminded me in a response to my Sunday blog, that Pitchers and Catchers report this week to Spring Training. So in turn, I thought I would share this information with you......

Using a formula combines statistical analytics and scouting,MLB Network named Detroit's Miguel Cabrera the top third baseman heading into 2012 season. The choice is likely to raise a few eyebrows of those who are unsure of what kind of defensive player Cabrera will be with the move back across the diamond. Tampa Bay's Evan Longoria, Boston's Kevin Youkilis, Texas' Adrian Beltre and Washington's Ryan Zimmerman followed Cabrera on the list. Mlive.com

I know this is going to raise the ire of some of you guys here on the gab, but remember when the Marlin's drafted Cabrera he was drafted as a third baseman. He only moved to first base when he was traded to Detroit, so he should be comfortable with the position again by Opening Day when Boston comes to Comerica Park.

Now its time to say good bye, its Valentine's Day and time to take my wife to lunch. I wish all you gabber's or your wives and girlfriends a Happy Valentine's Day. This time I will say for real, I am starting my break. I will still be popping in to view your blogs and respond to them like I always do, just won't be blogging as much or doing my Sunday thing with Hotchnuts......

Until I speak again, everyone have a great week and thanks for reading my post.......

As I sit by my desk wondering what the hell I am doing up at 3AM, aside from being thunder kicked out of bed by my son, I had been reading some blogs posted on facebook this evening and thought I would share some thoughts.......

The Browns once a proud football team like the Lions, have not really tasted any success since Bernie was their quarterback and  that was a long time ago, when they were losing to Denver in the AFC Championship team. Isn't it Mike Holmgren running the show  in Cleveland, has it been that long since he left Green Bay, that he forgot how to draft the right players to build a team around? Is he another Matt Millen, and cannot figure it out? Come on Mike, did you go to Cleveland to ruin the team, or are you finally going to start earning your money? I am not even a Browns fan, and I can see the rebirth of Matt Millen all over again in Cleveland. Pay him big bucks to rebuild your team, and then he screws you while making millions of dollars at the same time......

As far as Ray Lewis goes I wish he was playing for the Lions right now, he is a bad ass on the field and would have helped that defense mature nicely. He would have kicked Suh's ass for acting like an ass against Green Bay. Despite what happened at the bar, the fact that two people were murdered and the case I guess for whatever reason is unsolved? He is still a great football player on the field, why are we still bringing up the past? I feel sorry for the little girl who lost her daddy, however we must move on.

As the Lions enter the weekend of the unknown, there is a real possibility that they could come out of New Orleans heading towards another place where they have not tasted too much success, Green Bay. Maybe if the Lions win, the Packers will sit Rogers for another week so we can see the second coming of Johnny U., Matt Flynn destroy the Lions secondary once again. Here is a dose of reality, injuries have hit the already porous Lions secondary and if there is anything left of them, Rogers will surely finish them off the week after next.....

Hey is anyone here interested in pooling our money together and purchasing the Dodgers? Is it not next week that the Home Run King gets sentenced for lying under oath about his well-known steroid use? Everyone on the planet knew the skinny Barry Bonds when he played in Pittsburgh, and the muscle head that he turned into with the Giants. How could he lie, hope he spends 5 years in the pen.....

This is the calm before the storm boys, hope you enjoy reading this post....

As I was sitting here watching SpongeBob with Noah and Taylor and along with all of the snow we are getting today. I was thinking about a few more things I would like to share.....

Regardless of the outcome of Alabama-LSU the NCAA needs to rid itself of its demons, and institute a playoff system to determine the National  Champion just like they do in March with basketball. You could use the formula for used by the BCS committee to determine the field, maybe the top 8 teams or so and maybe make the playoff last about 3 weeks or so. They could use the bowl games like the Sugar Bowl to play the National Championship game, and neutral sites for the first two rounds of the playoffs. This is the only way that they truly can determine a National Champion. I do agree with their selection for the BCS Championship game, only because LSU and Alabama have been the best two teams in College football this season........

You could still use the bowl games for the rest of the field, and maybe this would help some of the smaller schools who would not get a nationally televised game a chance to be in the limelight and receive top dollar revenue for their programs along with getting better high school recruits. I know this is just my opinion, but the Northern Illinois of the world deserve a shot at some recognition but they will never receive any because the major conferences always receive all of the glory and revenues from those games......

I am not knocking teams like Notre Dame, who no matter how or what their record is during the season, always gets a bid because they are Notre Dame. Hell they did not beat any of the good schools they played this year outside of Michigan St, three of their losses came to schools like USC, Michigan and Stanford, and 8-4 gets them a top dollar bowl game to probably be shown on the Notre Dame Broadcasting Company (NBC). Do you think its fair that they should get a top dollar game, when they could not beat any of the big name teams they played during this football season? I believe that they should have to play football inside a conference, instead of being independent as they are in basketball and earn their way to the big money bowl game. Beeze, I am not picking on Notre Dame I am just using them as a reference point for a point that I am trying to get across to the reader of my blog.......

Sure this may lead the way for a few more .500 schools to gain entrance into bowl games that they would not normally get invitations too, but it did not bother the bowl selection committee to place teams like Ohio State in a bowl game this year even though they never were in contention for the Big Ten title. The playoff system may also benefit a team like Boise St who will be entering the Big East soon, because then they would not be deprived a shot at a national championship if they can win 3 playoff games........

These are just a few of my thoughts, feel free to express your opinion about what I spoke about.......

As I sit here contemplating the events of the past week, and the fact that tonight is wrestling night with my wife's cousin and his group returning for Smackdown. I was thinking to myself sure am glad there are other real things in life to deal with.....

I was watching television this morning, seeing our Republican controlled Congress acting selfish as usual concerning the impact the weather is having on our friends in the Northeast. Be safe my friends until our elected officials finally get their heads out of their asses and do the right thing for you......

I was watching the final burn on Jim Rome's page yesterday, when I realized something. It was okay when everyone was putting it on the Lions over the past decade, but now as the tables are turning and the Lions are starting to become a better team the teams other teams are not liking it. I did not see this as rubbing it in the Chiefs faces, I seen as taking advantage of a situation, it was not the Lions players fault Kansas City gave them the ball 3 times in the fourth quarter around the 35 yard line. C'mon when the Lions were doing that, it did not bother the other teams to pound the ball in their face and add points to the score.

Sorry guys and gals, but this is the NFL where one of the tiebreakers is points for. You do not see Tom Brady relax when he is up by 30 points, he is still throwing the ball and trying to put more points on the board until the clock reaches 0:00.\

I want to believe that this is a positive step in what would be considered the building of a good football team, good teams are ruthless and kick you when you are down, they are not remorseful they just keep adding to your misery.

Finally, in the spirit of "Freaky Friday," here is a little picture for Scotty who is a bit under the weather. Hope you are well soon bro, missed your Wednesday post.....

Thanks for reading my post and have a great weekend....

I was going to talk about NCAA football this weekend, but then I suddenly remembered that this is the weekend 1 of 3 that Michigan donates to their opponents athletic program by coming to the "Big House," and being their sacrificial lamb. I will talk about football next weekend, when Michigan is actually playing someone other than Eastern Michigan; when they face Notre Dame............

There is the normal buzz that occurs at either Fenway Park, when the Yankees and Red Sox's play each other. But there is a different type of buzz in the state of Michigan, everyone is either talking about the Tigers or Lions in anticipation of things yet to come. Earlier this summer, I wrote a piece about the Tigers-White Sox's series which got some mixed reviews at the time because the Tigers were still looking up at the Indians in second place I believe. However, if the Tigers want to cement themselves into the top of the American League Central they had better do well in this series. The White Sox's are throwing their best in Danks and Buerle, as we are in Verlander and Scherzer this weekend so if anything it should be an interesting series.

How well the Tiger's do this weekend depends on this arm, Verlander has been almost unbeatable after a Tiger's loss. Now we will see how reacts in a meaningful series, after a loss. No one really cares that the Tiger's split with the Royals except for the Tiger players themselves, their next two series against the Sox's and the Indians mean much more to their Division title hopes............

In a couple of weeks, the NHL will open camps to prepare for the upcoming season. It will seem kind of strange, not to see "Ozzie" or "Drapes" in camp preparing to make another run at Lord Stanley's Cup. However, as it was with "Stevie Y." we missed them for a moment, but let's be honest, the Red Wings need and infusion of youth on this team in order to remain able to compete for the Cup every year. I am just curious about one thing though.............

How many of you out there will actually miss the NBA season, I know I kind of will, because my wife and I love to go watch the Pistons play even if they suck. I just won't miss the "crybaby," who will never win a title in Miami as long as he fails to show up in the big games. I will not miss the Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs on television every night. But I will miss the Dallas Mavericks not getting the opportunity to defend their title, as the Red Wings were unable to do after they won before the NHL lockout.................

I am rooting for the Winnipeg Jets this season also, I hope they were able to get enough good players to be able to compete in their division this year. I cannot wait for the Wing's first West Coast road trip to Canada, or even their first game on HNIC, so I can watch this team. At least if anything this comes out of this season, Edmonton may not be the worst team in Western Canada at the end of the season. Yes I went there, I took a shot at the Oilers. Maybe they should move to another city, they have not been good since Gretzsky and Messier left, and their poor loyal fans deserve better...........

Thank you for reading my post, hope everyone has a happy and safe Labor Day weekend. By the way, GO LIONS AND TIGERS!!!!!!
