Grew up skinny as a rail...
Able to eat pretty much anything in sight...
Played tackle football in the eighth grade...
At a mere eighty-five pounds...
Didn’t really grow until high school...
Stopped at five-eight...
Buck forty, buck forty-five-ish...
Then into college and my first few married years...
Buck fifty-five, buck sixty...
Thought that would last forever...
It didn’t...
The body had an expansion draft in its thirties...
Hit one-seventy...
Buck seventy-five...
The older I got...
The slower the metabolism...
Started pasting Lays potato chips on my gut...
Raising a family...
No time for exercise and workouts...
Over the next twenty years...
I found myself at two-twenty slash two and a quarter-ish...
Found out I'm diabetic...
Lay off the sweets and carbs...
Gout, too...
No red meat or shellfish...
In other words...
Anything that tastes good is out of bounds...
Except for when I cheated...
Which is why I belly-upped to the two-twenties...
When I was unemployed...
I did make time to get it down to one eighty-five...
Then I started working....
And up it went...
I look at my wedding pics from two years ago...
Gross me out...
Since I’ve been teaching...
I’ve had a running joke with my students...
I stick out my belly and announce...
“The baby is due in June...”
Over the years...
I’ve done the clubs...
Tae-Bo...
Bike riding...
Walking...
I’ve been a sucker for the exercise gimmicks...
I’m on my third health club right now...
Nothing I’ve ever been able to sustain...
But I think I finally found something...
Aquatics...
No, not just swimming...
Actually, I don’t swim that much...
Just all kinds of exercises in the pool...
I started aquatics classes three months ago...
Just once a week to begin with...
Now if the schedule permits...
I can do three to four per week...
Sometimes just two or one...
Then I’ll go to the pool another day or two to supplement...
It’s much easier in the summer...
The weather’s hot...
Nice and refreshing...
The true test will be in the fall and winter...
When school is full steam...
And it’s a frigid 55-65 degrees outside...
Even colder as the sun sets earlier...
So Cal people are such wussies...
And then we have rain...
Nobody wants to exercise when its raining...
But I think back...
Back to when I was so much skinnier...
If I woulda, coulda, or shoulda...
I wouldn’t be where I am today...
Think about it....
A half-pound ain’t much, ain’t it???
Eight ounces....
Think about it...
You gain a half a pound a month...
In ten years...
Sixty pounds...
With all those delicious foods out there...
It’s surprising we don’t gain more than that...
Well, some do...
There always seems to be something...
That gets in the way of taking care of our bodies...
Once you get started...
It’s pretty easy to keep it up...
Once you get to stopping...
It’s pretty hard to get it started again...
I was down to 204 at the end of summer last year...
Early 220’s by May...
Aquatic aerobics...
I think I’m finally on to something...
Low impact...
And I can do more without getting too tired and hurting myself...
I can actually see some definition in my gut...
I am starting a two-pack...
Lost about 12 pounds in three months...
At this rate...
I’ll weigh a mere one hundred pounds in three years...
That’s if I can stay away from danger on the horizon...
School starts in two weeks...
Eat on the way to school...
Eat when I get to school...
Eat during nutrition...
Lunch...
On the way home from school...
(About an hour drive...)
Eat when I get home...
And too tired to go to the pool...
It’s a mind game...

But me thinks I’m prepared this year...
Got my whey protein shakes...
And my aquatics classes...
Hopefully that’ll do the trick...
