Whoa hey folks. Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. It’s almost midnight as I procrastinate once again. Don’t know what my issue is but here I go again.
Left work Saturday and a couple snow flurries came down and by the time I got to the other side of the parking lot I was in a blizzard. I’m not talking the Dairy Queen variety either. The wind was whipping and it was a white out. Had to sit in my car for 10 minutes waiting for visibility to drive. I had a white lawn for about an hour. Seriously, it’s now March 29th. Where is the lamb that’s supposed to greet me at the end of the month? I’m hugging my seed catalog right now.
So what of the land of Left Turns? Lets go check.
LARSON SENT TO THE HOSPITAL
Kyle Larson was signing autographs on Friday when he fainted. Chip Gnassi’s young up & coming star was sent to the hospital as a precaution. He was awake and alert and even knew how he did in practice earlier that day.
I certainly hope there’s nothing serious wrong. We’ve lost Vickers again for 3 months due to blood clots. We don’t need to be missing more drivers. I like this new guy.
JD GIBBS BEING TREATED FOR SYMPTOMS EFFECTING HIS BRAIN
Coach Joe Gibbs son JD has been having speech and processing issues due to a head injury from long ago. JD is very active in sports. Including, snowboarding, racing, football, mountain biking and other extreme sports.
He won’t be around the track so much but will be continuing his day to day responsibilities at JGR headquarters in Huntsville, NC
Another case of brain injury. I hope it’s not as bad as it sounds.
TIRE HANKY PANKY
NASCAR has been confiscating tires for their usual policing of the No No’s in racing. Apparently they’ve been finding some issues. Issues like tiny holes in the tires. Now who would do such a thing? Them smart think outside of the box crew chiefs that’s who. NASCAR has been on teams about following the air pressure specs from Goodyear. So I guess somebody figured a way around it with a drill and a teeny tiny drill bit.
When a tire is put on the air pressure builds up as the heat in the tire goes up. Tire pressure has been one of those adjustments that crew chiefs could do. A lot of the times you’d see cars leave the pit lane driving on the sides of their tires. When they take off at restart it can be tough but as the air heats up inside the tire, the tire inflates to the right size. You sometimes had blow outs and wrecks on restarts from the practice of using low air pressure as an adjustment.
So the media caught up with Chad Knaus (Johnson’s Crew chief) and Alan Gustafson (Gordon’s crew chief) to ask them about what they knew about the tire issue.
Gustafson said that he was too busy on Sundays and didn’t have time to watch what’s going on in the garage. He didn’t feel he had enough information to comment. Asked if he was warned. He said,”I don’t want to say warned. Warned may not be the right term, just reminded.”
Knaus seemed to have that same I’m too busy on Sundays and don’t have friends in the garage area so he doesn’t know any thing either response. But he did text Richard Buck who is the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Director to ask if it was ok to drill holes in the tires and he was told absolutely not.
So I guess it’s official. No unapproved bleeding of air pressure.
Just so all the crew chiefs got this message NASCAR had a meeting on Friday to remind everyone of the 3 big No No’s in NASCAR racing.
1. Don’t alter the engine in a manner outside the rule book.
2. Don’t alter the Sunoco fuel.
3. Don’t make unapproved alterations to the Goodyear tires.
I’m wondering if they got around to the pulling out of the side skirts to flair out the wheel wells?
Kurt Busch had the pole, led the most laps and was robbed of the win. That’s what I think. So did a lot of the fans who watched the race. I’m real tired of DEBRIS CAUTIONS changing the outcome of the race.
NASCAR said that there really was a piece of metal in the racing groove with 2 laps to go and felt that they needed to call the caution. During the 2nd Green/White Checker Biffle spun but got his car refired “So we could let it come back to a natural finish.”
NATURAL FINISH MY ASS. That whole thing was unnatural. First of all they never showed the supposed debris. If it was a shock, I’d be saying yup, lets have a caution but just a piece. What piece are we talking here? Fans were blowing up Twitter. A lot of fans who don’t like Kurt were sticking up for him. I’m calling BS. They manufactured that ending. Any body but Kurt Busch was the theme. They deny it but if you watch the end you’d think so too.
If a big action packed ending is what you need then get rid of the first 350 laps and we’ll have a 50 lap shoot out with 4 cautions for DEBRIS in there. Lets forget about the real fans who really want to watch it and create a 50 lap spectacle with at least 2 GWC’s in there.
Other happenings in the race were not real not worthy. Kenseth broke an axle on pit road when they dropped the jack with 15 to go. He was leading too. The caution that brought him to pit road was…wait for it….a debris caution.
So Harvick and Busch duke it out. Busch gets the lead and at 2 laps to go the nasty debris caution comes out. And Busch says,”WWE.” on the radio. How right he is. I was thinking the exact same thing when it came out.
The 1st GWC gets shot down on the first lap because somebody pile drove into Larson’s bumper and his rear bumper cover flies over all the cars. Now THAT’S debris you can see.
GWC #2 sees Biffle spin around as everyone passes him coming to the white flag but no caution flag is flown. Keselowski and his 4 fresh tires muscles past Busch on only 2 fresh tires for the win.
Top 15 Finishers – Keselowski – Harvick – Ku Bu – Menard – Newman – Dale Jr – Logano – Truex – Johnson – Gordon – Almirola – Allgaier – Edwards – Stewart – Stenhouse
We’re on to short track racing with a .526 mile lap and curbing that knocks cars for a loop. If you’re a driver with revenge on your mind then this is your track. It’s small and cars can’t get away from you as quick. Last years winner was Kurt Busch. He didn’t even qualify in the top 10. Only 3 drivers, Johnson, Logano & Kenseth qualified in the top 10 and ended in the top 10. This is a rough and tumble run over the guy in front of you track.
HARVICK – Top 2 streak is now 8 races long with his 2nd place last week. Can’t bet against that hot streak. Top 10
JOHNSON – Has 18 Top 5’s here with a 122.5 driver rating. Top 10
GORDON – Has 28 Top 5’s here. Top 10
DALE JR – A win in October last year as well as a 3rd in the March race of that same year. Top 10
NEWMAN – Starts 2nd today. He’s still on a roll. Top 10.
LOGANO – Pole and he won the truck race on Saturday. Top 10
LARSON – Since I don’t know what’s up with his fainting spell I’m going to pass on this young man this week.
KU BU – I think he’s a tad pissed about last week. He’s starting 26th but he does know how to race this track. He won the March race last year. Top 10.
KENSETH – Starts 8th and Has a top 10 in both races at this track last year. Top 10
STEWART – I really want to say that my most handsome Knight of the Mobile 1 is back and this track would be the one to prove that. Top 10
MENARD – My dark horse pick for a top 10
Other picks for your salary cap leagues.
Chris Buescher did a nice job in the #34 subbing for Ragan last week. Came in 20th. Not bad for low budget equipment and he’s a bargain at $5.50.
Austin Dillon is $18 and has 2 top 15’s last year at this track.
Moffitt is in the #55 subbing for Vickers. He’s $8. Not sure how he’ll do at this track but he’s cheap.
Cole Whitt is $9 and Landon Cassill is $8. Both are decent picks to round out that salary cap.
Mears and Allgaier will start in the back due to a transmission change for 1 and a back up car for the other. Great picks but not sure if they can get through the gauntlet to a good finish.
So there you have it. I still haven’t finalized my NASCAR LIVE picks. The salary cap thing boggles my mind. I am 1 & 2 in my Streak league and #1 in my Yahoo league so I’m starting out ok.
Going to hug my seed catalog this week, close my eyes and click my heels 3 times or more while I chant……There’s no place like my garden in the spring. Then maybe I’ll scream, SERENITY NOW!!!!! Seriously now, it’s time.
You all have a great weekend.
And I’m outta here =^!^=
