It’s late March by the calendar which should mean Spring is here…but the long winter snow is slow to melt and the cold is slow to give way to the warmer air hanging just to our south and west.
The trees are budding and the early flowers are trying to bust thru the frozen tundra. Our brains are still weak and distracted from the past winter ordeal which makes thinking a painful exercise and physical activity just plain painful.
MLB is ready to open the 2015 season, the cold weather teams traveled north to open the stadiums to the fans that have that eternal hope for a championship.
My Boston Red Sox have won 3 WS championships in the past 11 seasons, ’04, ’07 and ’13. That run included two last place finishes in 2012 and this past season.
The Sawx lacked hitting and traded away any semblance of starting pitching in order to “start over”
Start over meant signing the two best hitters available in free agency: Pablo Sandoval and Hanley Ramirez…or is that Sando Pabloval and Randy Hameirez. Starting pitching looks like it could be a stroke of genius or a blind man throwing darts at a board of available 3’s and 4’s
A rotation of the oft injured and self proclaimed Cy Young winner for 2015 Joe Kelly, Clay Buchholz trying to regain the form that he’s had for a variety of half seasons, Justin Masterson who, if you remember from years gone by can look like Nolan Ryan one day and John “Way back” Wasden the next.
Round that out with lefty Miley Cyrus…oooopps not that Miley!
Wade Miley, a lefthander that has National league stuff… one wonders if that will translate to the AL East. My buddy Harvey thinks it will. And then there is Rick Porcello from the Tigers, traded for by shipping “Cespedes for the rest of us”
…and you have a group that could be very good or very bad but will probably lead this team to 3rd place and a .500 record in the AL East.
Which Papi do you like better, SNL Papi or MLB Papi?
The lineup should produce more runs than last year’s model. How much pop Big Papi has left remains to be seen. Hanley and Pablo should produce some runs; Pedroia will too if he stays healthy. Mookie Betts has been nothing short of sensational this Spring and will start in CF.
Defensively the best player will probably spend the year in AAA because Jackie can’t hit. Boegarts and Sandoval don’t give you the most range on the left side of the infield and with what the manager John Farrell describes as a ground ball producing rotation this may not bode well.
Closer, 41 year old Koji is hurt. His fastball, cutter, slider tops out at 87 mph. He struggled last year on the closing role before being resigned in the off season. This will be another weakness for this team.
So, I’m not trying to be negative but in my assessment of what the needed and what they were able to get I’d say : best case is .500 ball but they should finish ahead of the Yankees in the AL East.
This old guy again….
Aging in place, Bartolo Colon has been named by the NY Mets as their opening day starter. The 42 yearold is listed at 5’11” and 285 lbs. He must take good care of himself at this advanced age because he pitched over 200 innings last year while going 15-13 4.08. This is his 18th major leage season, his lifetime record is 204-141 3.95
Golfer Rory Mc Elroy played a recreational practice round with Tom Brady last week. Brady invited McElroy to work out with him at the Bay Hill gym the next day. Mc Elroy said he walked into the weight room at 6:15 AM and Brady was already lifting. To McElroy’s surprise, Brady had a couple of buddy’s joining the workout…at 6:30 AM both Peyton and Eli Manning walked in. They later had breakfast and hung out.
At Arnie’s Bay Hill, was won by Matt Every for the second straight year.
The shots of the tournament were hit by Zack Johnson and PGA rookie Daniel Berger.
Berger hit a five iron 237 yards on the par 5 hole 2 that bounced once and rolled into the cup.
On his second shot on the par 5 16th hole Johnson pulled out his 5 iron and hit a perfect 207 yard shot that rolled into the cup. 207 yards…
to you non golfers that’s 711 and 621 feet…that’s as far as it is from home plate at Fenway Park, over the Green Monster (315′) to the West bound breakdown lane on the Mass Pike.West bound is to the right of the pic.
2 shots on a par 5…that’s a double Eagle or and Albatross or a heck of a shot. Most 500+ yard par 5’s are at least a 6 for me on a good day, I’ve picked up my ball after double digit strokes on some par 5’s.
Another of the young golfers that has caught the eye of the best observers is 21 year old Jordan Spieth. In his 3rd season he has played in 65 events, he has 21 top ten finishes with 2 wins and has earned over 10 million. Strong off the tee, magical with the irons and a fearless putter he reminds me of a young Tiger Woods.
How are your brackets doing? I’m not in last place. I have what they call “a pure luck bracket” I still have 3 of my final 4 alive and Kentucky was my un-informed pick.
NFL; Some will say how is this fair! The Super Bowl winning Patriots were awarded two compensatory picks by the NFL. The Pats now hold 5 picks in the top 101 and 9 overall in the upcoming draft. As Tim pointed out on Monday in his blog, the NCAA Hockey Tournament is upcoming and you should do yourself a favor and try to catch a game or two.
The sun is out and the snow is melting…the winter depression is fading…Sam Adams Summer Ale should be available soon.
