Hello folks, and welcome to this week’s grumble! We had one hell of a crazy week in sports, between opening day and the crowning of a new national champion in college basketball, plus we’ve got playoff pushes happening in both the NBA and NHL. This for sure is one of the richer times of year we get as sports fans.
All is good at the Nut Factory… still working a ton of hours, still enjoying what I do… except for raisins. Fucking raisins… I never thought in my life that I would say out loud that I hate raisins, but sure enough I’ve said it dozens of times since starting here! The boxes for some reason like to explode… which leads to it raining raisins… which leads to a gigantic mess… which leads to me cursing the very grapes that spawned them! Fucking raisins.
The boy has been off for spring break all week, which is leading Mrs.IHM to want to go to a different Nut House! It’s really been a rough freaking week around here, especially since the boy has decided he doesn’t like sleeping anymore. He’s got the same gene as his great grandma, (skipped a generation), aunt, uncle AFD, and me all had… he’s a freaking night owl! Of course, having to be up at five every morning makes that pretty damned inconvenient for me… and even worse for Mrs. IHM since she always ends up having to stay up past 11 with him! God bless her, because I remember when she was working and I wasn’t the nights I’d spend up til whenever the hell just waiting for him to go to sleep!
But on to sports… and what a week in sports. Duke is the new national champ, which means Kentucky isn’t… which means I am happy! As much as I dislike Mikey the Rat… I’d rather see him pick up another ring than Calipari! As much as I was rooting for Wisky, I had a feeling Duke had their number.
Speaking of Coach Cal… seems that somehow that bag of shit was elected to the basketball hall of fame… further proof that it is and continues to be the worst Hall of Fame in all of sports! Joining Coach John Calipari and his trail of NCAA violations and broken programs will be Dikembee Mutumbo (the only deserving member of the class IMHO), Jo Jo White (borderline guy) and Spencer Haywood (another borderline guy), along with some referees and women’s players (who I don’t know enough about to make any commentary on). This is exactly what happens when you start putting borderline guys into a Hall of Fame… you end up opening up the floodgates and you end up with a Hall of Very Good… not a showcase of the immortals. Seriously, this thing is starting to look like the WWE Hall of Fame!
In other college basketball news, Kentucky G Andrew Harrison, along with his brother, have both declared their intentions for the NBA Draft, despite the fact that neither is considered a first round prospect. My question… if Sterling is run out of the NBA for perceived (and over exaggerated) racism in a private conversation, what happens to Harrison if he decides to use the word “nigga” again in front of a hot mic? Or is that okay since it’s “their word”? How is it we keep rolling along and allowing these bullshit double standards?
Over in baseball, the Tigers have had a solid opening week while sweeping the Twins 3-0, outscoring Minnesota 22-1 in the process. J.D. Martinez has picked up right where he left off last season, Cespedes has been a damn solid addition to the lineup and a productive RBI guy, and Anthony Gose has been a pleasant surprise thus far, getting on base and setting the table well while platooning with Raji Davis in center field. The return of Jose Iglesies seems to be having a big effect on the club on both sides of the ball as well, with improved defense at short and a solid bat in the 9 hole. Today Shane Greene was damn good in his Tigers debut, going seven innings while giving up an unearned run.
It hasn’t been ALL good news in Tigers land though… Justin Verlander made just his second career trip to the DL to begin the year, and Joe Nathan joined him the next day. Verlander is expected to be back next week sometime, while Nathan’s return is still unknown.
Since we’re just starting the season, I’ll throw my predictions out there in short form, since I only have a few more minutes before my stories come on!
AL EAST- I see the Blue Jays emerging from this fray, with the winner being just a bit above .500. The Sawx finish second, the O’s third, the Yankees 4th, and the Rays in the cellar.
AL CENTRAL- I think the Tigers pull it out thanks to their experience… but this will be a nail biter. The Indians, White Sox, and Royals will all be right in the thick of it barring any catastrophic injuries. I’ll take the Tigers in first, with the White Sox finishing second (Wild Card), the Tribe third, the Royals 4th (they lost too much this offseason in Shields and Aoki) and the Twins last.
AL WEST- The Seattle Mariners will win the West, mark my words. I just have a feeling about this team, and I see them going all the way to the World Series as well riding an improved lineup (Cano and Cruz batting 3-4). I see the Angels in second (Wild Card), the Astros in third, the A’s 4th, and the Rangers in last (can they keep a single starting pitcher healthy for a full season?).
AL PLAYOFFS- I see the Tigers and Mariners meeting in the ALCS, with the Mariners taking it in seven.
NL EAST- The Washington Nationals ride their ridiculous starting rotation all the way to the NL EAST title… and they’ll be hard to beat in a seven game series with all those aces to throw at you! I see the Mets in second, the Braves third, the Marlins 4th, and the Phillies in the cellar.
NL CENTRAL- This is always a crap shoot, but I think the Cardinals have the rotation to win out. I see the Pirates in second (Wild Card), the Reds third, the Cubbies 4th, and the Brew Crew in last… but the gap between 1st and last will be under ten games.
NL WEST- The West will be a tough one this year, but I think they get two playoff teams out of it. The Dodgers are my pick to win, the Padres in second (Wild Card), the Rockies in 3rd, the Diamondbacks 4th, and the Giants pulling their odd year act and finishing last!
In the NL Playoffs, the Dodgers and Nationals will meet the NLCS, with the Nats taking it in six.
In the World Series, I have the Nationals beating the Mariners 4-2… D.C. gets their champion for the first time since the Washington Bullets of the late 70’s!
AL MVP- Robinson Cano
NL MVP- Adrian Gonzalez
AL Cy Young- Felix Hernandez
NL Cy Young- Kershaw again
AL ROY- Daniel Norris
NL ROY- Joc Pederson
Should be a hell of a lot of fun to watch what happens this season! What are you looking forward to in this 2015 MLB season Gabbers?
That’s all I’ve got this week ladies and gents. Thanks as always for reading, and for any comments you leave on the way out. Have a great weekend Gabbers.
