Yeah, that’s gonna be me all day today… welcome to this week’s Grumble with IHM. Unfortunately last week we had an interruption in our regularly scheduled program… just a crazy week with work and dealing with all the aftermath of the accident/trying to secure a new set of wheels, and the Mrs. IHM’s birthday all rolled into one. Luckily on Saturday I’ll be going to the lot to pick up my newest ride (a GMC Envoy with around 100,000 miles, leather interior, some nice wood trim and a few other choice features), and I can quit riding around town in the “FREE CANDY” van. It’s literally a windowless white work van… just like the ones you see on all the generic cop shows when someone is abducted!
The scary thing is, that is the exact make/model van too. If it were mine and not a loaner, I would totally spray paint that on the side for shits and giggles.
But that’s enough about me and my shit… how about all the shit happening in the world of sports the last couple of weeks? #1 on that list has got to be the fast and furious action of the MLB trade deadline, which hits at 4PM today. The majority of the big names out there have already been dealt… but this feels like the kind of year where we’ll see a surprise or two thrown out there.
So far it looks like we have two clear winners; the Toronto Blue Jays who added all-world (when he’s healthy anyhow) SS Troy Tulowitzki and David Price to the fold… and the Houston Astros who have added Scott Kazmir, Carlos Gomez, Mike Fiers, and are reportedly in talks with San Diego to snag either Tyson Ross, Andrew Cashner, or even Craig Kimbrell. Toronto is still a ways back in the AL East… but the Stros are now sitting alone atop the AL West after beating the Angels Wednesday night. Great to see both of these clubs as buyers and not sellers this time of year.
On the other hand, there are the Detroit Tigers. Normally buyers, this year we are in the seller’s role. The team is under .500 at this point and four games back in the Wild Card race… but there really isn’t much hope of this team making much noise without another quality starter after Price. None of the four options the team has, Verlander, Sanchez, Simon, or Greene, have had any sort of consistency this season, so trading Price, who is a free agent and will be pursued by major spenders like the Yankees, Red Sox, and any other team with a pulse, was almost a no-brainer. Of course there are whiny cunt Tiger fans who are mad because they are “giving up on this season”. Pie in the sky bullshit is all that is… they are done, and they are in a LOT more trouble than anyone is willing to admit.
This is a team saddled by many terrible contracts. Verlander still has five more years at $28 million per… Sanchez still has three years left at 16 million per… Martinez, a 40 year old DH with bad knees still has three more years at 18 million per… and Miggy still has another ten years at $30 million per. Of the four, the only one worth anywhere near that money is Miggy, assuming this year is just a hiccup and he isn’t going to develop a pattern of injury as he ages. This is a team that is in major financial trouble, and getting a solid prospect like Norris, along with the other two young pitchers they got, as well as getting rid of Soria and getting a solid infield prospect from the Pirates in return, is the only way this team can really add any sort of quality. The question now becomes what to do with Cespedes. Do you try and re-sign him, or with the lack of bats on the market do you get all you can for him? Personally, I’m trying to get everything I can for the guy, because he’s probably out the door after this year anyhow!
So we’ll see who all ends up where later on today; nothing better than hot stove season in MLB!
Over in the NFL, the big news is still, somehow, Deflate-Gate. All the hot air is finally going to be decided in a court room… and hopefully someone will finally step in and end this madness! How the hell do you let a fucking woman/child abuser walk away essentially scott free while giving a guy who is the face of your freaking league a four game suspension over some slightly deflated footballs? Just plain sad. Sully, OH, and the rest of our Boston fans will have stronger feelings/opinions on this matter than I do, but the whole thing wreaks to me. This might just be the Sheriff’s last stand, because people are finally waking up and realizing what a corrupt bastard this guy is! I hope the union puts up a serious fight on this one and shoves this right up Goodell’s ass. Better yet, I hope Brady serves his time, Goroppolo steps in and keeps things afloat while he’s gone, and Tom Brady comes back and leads the Patriots to an up yours repeat title. As much as I love my Lions, once they are inevitably eliminated from the playoffs/contention, I’ll be rooting hard for a Pats repeat just to see the looks on all the douchebags faces. Can’t wait for football to be back!
That’s all I’ve got for this week folks. Thanks as always for reading, and for any comments you leave on the way out. Keep your eyes on that bottom scroll… because who knows what will be the next big name to move the way things are going this year! Have a great weekend Gabbers.
