Somewhere out there, our friend IrishShu is smiling at Montana’s win today over four time defending D-1AA champ North Dakota State. Today ESPN covered the first TELEVISED College Football game of the season, and let me tell you something, you WILL NOT see a much better played game between two teams in College Football, regardless of division and/or conference.
Montana has a new head coach from D-2 Colorado School of Mines. North Dakota State has a new HC after their legendary one moved on to Wyoming after dominating D-1AA. And yet, look at the game these two played – on the opening game of the season? How the hell can you top this? Seriously, how? It is extremely rare that you get that quality of a game regardless of division, and even more amazing is that this game was in FREAKING AUGUST!!!
Seriously, go back and watch it and I challenge you to find a much better played and coached game. I know how I drone on about North Dakota State, but even ESPN is pimping North Dakota State saying they can hang with the D-1 boys, and look what Montana did! Not only did they hang with the Bison, they actually won!
Talk about a game of contrasts: Strike, counter strike, riverboat gambling and ultra-conservative. Solid defense in the second half, buck wild offense to start the game. Power running games, and receivers climbing the ladder to catch perfectly placed passes on the sideline.
It doesn’t get much better than this: :02 left in the game, North Dakota State up 35-31, Montana has the ball on the NDSU one yard line. Eff it, let Montana homer Brent Musberger call it…
We rightfully bitch about the NCAA and College Football. At times its scripted, at times it’s boring, at times it’s non-sensical, and at times, it’s pretty damned uninspiring. But every once in a while, we as CFB fans are treated to one hell of a ball game, and today we got it from of all places – Missoula, Montana (covered by ESPiN no less). Montana’s win today over four time defending champion North Dakota State 38-35 was pretty epic.
Soon, this game will be ignored in favor of the power and the money, and that’s a damn shame because as a young man told me today – this game was an instant classic! But if this game is indicative of how the College Football season is gonna go – sign me the hell up, I’m ready for some damn excitement!
