It is the one week of the year that all 4 major sports are going at once the NBA tipped off on Tuesday. The World Series will be completed before “A Charlie Brown Christmas” airs. The NHL has been going strong for a month, but seems longer and the NFL just keeps going despite the many problems that league has…we still can’t get enough.
The NFL just want to keep themselves in the limelight. Games in London are almost as bad as games in LA. Really are they trying to showcase the league, but you podcast the Jaguars and the Bills in the I don’t care Bowl in London? I don’t get it, the game sells itself. Why are we expanding to Europe, where they play football there with their feet and they play a form of Football Americano without pads? I can see the scheduling nightmare . Say the London Royals (formerly the Jacksonville Jaguars) are playing the LA Chargers on a Thursday Night what a mess traveling for the Chargers or vise a versa. Really lets keep it simple put a team in LA fine put one in Toronto that’s international . Ok maybe not but just think of the concept for Canadian fans a shorter field and an extra down , By the way my Italian number cals Canada Uppa U s (you figure it out).
I just can’t see any of these leagues expanding. I thought the NHL learned their lesson, but now they are talking expansion again . Their product is excellent right, now why ruin it with another half empty arena in Vegas? Stop it already…lets not expand and say we did.
While I’m thinking of stupid things in my mind, no sports team should be called the Pelicans. It’s a dumb name and an even dumber bird. Really , the New Orleans Pelicans? The Jazz was the best name but sadly… they can’t have that name back. What about the Saints? There are Giants in baseball and football at one time and they both played in New York . There are Cardinals in both Baseball and Football and at one time they both played in St Louis. So why not the Saints or even the Saxes? They could have a silhouette of the late great Clearance Clemons blowing his Sax as an emblem. It makes me think how come no teams are called the Gorillas or the Apes or the Maniacal Simmions? What about a team called the Dogs?
I’m not sure if Brooklyn is an Island but if it is, the Islanders fit . But then again the Jets and Giants aren’t calling them selves Jersey either.
Anyway Game one of the World Series was crazy, as Jeff said if this is game any indication of what the series will be like… it will be a good one. I thought last night had drama excitement and even no replay the way things used to be. Inside park homers and extra innings.
I would like to compliment Todd Bowles for making the NYJ relavent again. I’m not a Jets Fan, actually I am far from it…but they gave the Patriots a helluva game Sunday. I actually stayed to the end. I usually try to beat traffic out Foxboro and leave with about 5 minutes left as usually the contest has already been decided by the Patriots. I stayed for the whole game on Sunday thought the Jets played well. Of course the Patriots helped them stay around with 11 dropped passes, but they won and Brady was excellent with a make shift offensive line .
The regular hockey season starts Friday and his other team starts the following Saturday. The boys are seeded right and the games should be better. There are a lot of week night games on Mondays which clears time for the other team on the weekends. I will be spending a lot of time at rinks over the next few months. The boys didn’t have a good preseason played 12 games… won one.
It’ s funny how the officiating world stays connected. I was at Lil Lanz’s flag football game Saturday night and knew the Ref from both football and basketball. Flag football ended at 8 Hockey t 9. The ref was a guy I have done a ton of baseball and some football with. It’s crazy.
Saturday, I filled in for a friend as Head linesman at one of those 50K a year private High Schools. Damn were those kids dirty. I threw more flags in that game than I have thrown in 5 years. Including two of the dumbest penalties I have ever seen. I swear this kid has done it before. A kid on his team (team from CT) breaks one for a TD. I’m trailing the play as I should and I hear the entire sideline yelling don’t touch anybody yelling the kids name. Sure enough he blocks in the back at about the 25 right in front of me. I hear the coach say see that F flag you just cost us. The second one was from the 50k team. Kids down there is already one flag on the play. The whistle was blown and the kid was just starting to get up when the safety comes in out of nowhere and pushes the kids head. I look and said you just didn’t do that! I hit him with an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty… just dumb.
Congrats to the Malden Golden Tornados beating the Everett Crimson for the first time since 1991 and winning the Greater Boston League Title.
That’s it off to the Pats-Dolphins tonight.
