There’s only one way to rock. Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. I actually have the radio on tonight. Listening to the classics and no Beethoven isn’t that type of classic.
So I trust that most of the Northeasterly Gabbers and others are dug out of that lovely snow storm. I was a tad miffed at the guy across the street parking his Dodge pick up on the street instead of in his driveway. I barely had enough room to get out of my driveway and take a very sharp left to miss him. They did a poor job plowing this year and he didn’t help by leaving his truck in the street. The piles on the corners and in peoples yards make it hard to see at the stop signs. Will be in the 40’s today. Hope more snow melts.
Here’s an aerial view of Richmond after the big Jonas storm. I say put snow tires on them cars and race. How bad could it be?
It’s the last day of January already. Where did it go? No Grammy time this past week. Had manditory OT to do. I guess that’s a good thing but it’s getting in the way of my Grammy time. Would’ve been fun to build a snowman with them.
Gosh I could eat some peanut M&M’s right now but we’ll hold off on that to focus on our mission here on this page. So what of the land of Left Turns?
POCONO GROUNDHOG DAY SPECIAL
Groundhog Day is February 2nd and Pocono has a deal for you. For every $50 Pocono Raceway Gift Card you buy between now and February 2nd your name will be put in a drawing for a top hat signed by Dale Jr and Jimmie Johnson.
They didn’t say if it was a human size top hat or one stolen from Phil or Orphie. Can’t help you out there.
THE VOICE OF NASCAR SILENCED
Barney Hall was the voice you’d hear on MRN radio calling the NASCAR races. Calm but articulate. He could make a dozen snails sliming their way around Daytona sound exciting. He passed away on Tuesday at the age of 83. NASCAR made a spot for Ken Squier and Barney Hall in the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
I used to turn the tv sound down and turn on the radio. Barney just knew how to put the tv broadcast booth guys to shame. And with all the commercials, he helped keep the running order going. He will be missed.
NASCAR HALL OF FAME 7TH CLASS
JERRY COOK – 6 championships in the NASCAR modified division
BOBBY ISAAC – Grabbed 19 poles in 1969. Still holds the record for most poles in a single season
TERRY “IRONMAN” LABONTE – Cup championships in 1984 & 1996. Had 655 consecutive starts.
BRUTON SMITH – Owns 8 race tracks on the NASCAR circuit
CURTIS TURNER – drove in the convertible series. Only driver to win 2 consecutive races from the pole leading every lap.
Congrats to all these inductees.
KESELOWSKI SELLS BLUE DUECE AT BARRETT JACKSON
There were a lot of cool offerings at the Barrett Jackson Collector Car Event. The original Bandit was sold for $500,000 with Burt Renolds in the audience. I would’ve expected it to go a bit higher due to it being a movie car and a very big movie at that.
Also on the auction block was a NASCAR Dodge Charger from 2012 that Brad Keselowski drove in the Texas Fall Chase race. He got $150,000 for it and gave the money to The Paralyzed Veterans of America.
BRISTOL TO HOST 2 COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAMES
On Sept 10 Tennessee vs Virginia Tech will be known as the Battle of Bristol. This historical game is expected to surpass the attendance record of the Michigan vs Notre Dame game that saw 115,109 attendees at Michigan Stadium.
On Sept 17 East Tennessee State will host West Carolina University.
I guess there’s more to do at a race track besides racing, monster trucks and concerts.
RULE CHANGE IN NASCAR FOR 2016
All wrenches used on pit road during the race to make wedge and or track bar adjustments are to be yellow. Teams have always had different color wrenches for the left and right side of the car or according to the adjustments made on the car. Most think this rule is to be able to see the wrenches on pit road cameras better.
DAYTONA RISING OFFICIALLY DONE
On Wednesday Lesa France Kennedy and Jim France did the ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open Daytona International Speedway as the first Motorsports Stadium. The 2 and a half year $400 million project has many new amenities and you can watch the time lapse video on their Facebook page. I used somebody else page to watch it.
Some of the cool new stuff……Escalators that can take you to the top of the grandstands….Narrow seats replaced with wider seats that have cup holders….1400 video monitors…New food and drink vending areas….new bathrooms….AND the best thing of all is that safer barrier walls are now the whole way around the track except for pit road.
There was also the sign above. In an effort to try and keep trash off the race track they will offer wet wipes instead of napkins. I’m not seeing how this will keep the trash off the track as they do dry out and then can become air born. But I can see their point. Maybe it will cut back on the trash issue. So if I ever get to Daytona I’ll know to bring a roll of Bounty.
So there we go. Another week closer to the Daytona 500. Just 21 days away. They just released the start times. I’ll have to add them to my schedule on the closet door.
Enjoy your Sunday folks
And I’m outta here =^!^=
