Well a couple of blokes on the other side of the pond apparently don’t feel it is proper for the NFL to send the Redskins over to play a game against the Bengals next season. Two members of Parliament are offended by the NFL sending the Redskins over. I thought our politicians had agendas, apparently it’s universal. Every time I think this name story dies it somehow gets new life. Again… it’s a football tram, lets move on.
Geez I hate when there is no controversy in Red Sox spring training. It just gets my juices flowing for baseball. The one thing I guess that is a big non story around these parts is Panda came in a little hefty. The Red Sox say he is at 17% body fat but perhaps they are fibbing a little. It’s just good to know baseball is around the corner. I hope we have a lot of good baseball as we have had of the past few seasons and I’m not talking about the last place Red Sox, I’m talking overall. I think the major league baseball product has improved greatly over the past few years. I think high payrolls don’t get you there but good pitching does. the Red Sox what they needed was good pitching last yera and they got a Panda and Hanley neither a wise investment. This year they paid huge money 217 million for David Price and got Craig Kimbrel a number one starter and a solid closer. All they need now is consistency in the rotation so Kimbrel can do his job daily not just every 5th day when Price pitches.
The David Ortiz farewell tour has started. I’m not the biggest Ortiz fan out there but the guy is saying all the right things about retiring. As a DH he has a few more years left but I also think he will go out this season with something left in the tank.
The Boston Bruins are in need of a solid defense-man. The guy set to be on the block is Louie Erickson which would be a trade off. Erickson can put the puck in the net in exchange for a good blue liner to keep the puck out of the net. The Bruins have struggled at home this season but have played very well on the road.
I took Friday off as it was school vacation week here in Massachusetts. The Bantam Team had a game at 12:20 Friday afternoon. The boys skated for two periods and then let down at the end. We needed a third coach on the bench to open the gate for the defense-man. We let a kids dad that doesn’t get too involved with the team but is always supportive . The guy had the time of his life and told myself and Lou our other coach how much fun he had watching us work and watching the game up close.
On Saturday we had Bantam practice and a middle school team game. The Middle School Team won 6-0. Lil Lanz played his best game all season and had a goal and an assist, but most of all he made plays. The middle school team starts the playoffs Saturday they are the 3rd seed. Sunday it was Bantams again the boys lost another they should have won too many stupid penalties.
The indoor Track Season started for those of you in warmer climates basically a track meet in a gym. Laser did well for hi first season ran the 300, the 55, and the high jump. the coaches liked him. The plan is if he gets cut from Baseball he will run outdoor track in the spring. I sat throw the indoor track banquet and just noticed a bunch of kids that were pretty good basketball players when they were younger are pretty good track athletes. I also noticed a lot of the hockey kids stuck with hockey.
Laser last Tuesday night had a captains practice for High School and then following he had an AAU practice three hours in two different indoor places for practice. He came out of AAU practice saying, “I love my boy Steinberg”. I guess that is why he always plays catch with him. I say where is he from? He says… a neighboring town. I say ask him if his dad is named Paul in grow up in my hometown. Sure enough his dad is named Paul and w were childhood friends! Paul was a pretty good athlete, but moved away at some point and we lost contact. I can’t wait to talk about the glory days with him.
HBO will be airing a documentary VICE 40 on Friday Night at 11 pm about new technology to fight blindness. A close friend of mine is featured in this documentary. They followed the guy for a month right up to his surgery where they implanted a computer chip behind his eye to improve his low vision. The program airs Friday at 11.
Laser is scheduled to be interviewed on the New England Sports Network Friday on this startup non contact Hockey League for kids that have had concussions and other injuries that don’t allow them full contact. Laser has had two concussions and probably could play but decided not to…but he misses it greatly. This a chance for him to play again.
Finally it was my daughters 19th birthday yesterday. The Mrs made her way up to New Hampshire and took her out to dinner. She will be home this weekend to celebrate in between hockey games.
That’s all Folks.
