Ooooooooo Weeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!! Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. Guess we’ll be hiding from the heat & humidity all across America. Not the kind of day you want to be out in unless you’re in the pool.
Came home from work and checked my answering machine. It would seem according to the female computerized voice that the IRS is giving me my final warning and they’re about to sue me. I almost called the number just for shits and giggles. But I was too tired to pick on some scammer.
Watched a video on You Tube this week. It was called SuperMeat – REAL meat without harming animals. It gave me the chills. They take stem cells from the neck of an animal and grow them in a petri dish. Sound like a movie from the 70’s? Sure does to me. Soylent Green would be the movie I thought of immediately. Scary shit. Just how far away from that movie are we?
So what of the land of Left Turns?
JEFF GORDON TO DRIVE THE #88
It’s true. Jeff was supposed to be driving the pace car for the Brickyard 400 but there’s been a change of plans. Dale Jr is still battling nausea and balance issues. That means he won’t be driving a race car this weekend and most likely next weekend.
Jeff said he said yes immediately after Hendrick asked him to drive the #88. His concerns for the weekend would be the heat and remembering to pull into the #88 pit stall and not the #24 when coming in for tires and fuel. The speedway had posted Jeff Gordon’s name over the garage door but Dale Jr’s team demanded they put Dale Jr’s name there. So it was changed.
Indianapolis Motor Speedway says ticket sales have been declining over the years. When Jeff retired it went way down but there was a spike in ticket sales about 90 minutes after Hendrick announced Gordon’s return to sub for Dale Jr.
When Jeff was asked if he was worried about not being eligible for the NASCAR HoF if he subbed for Dale Jr, he said no. The rule is that a driver must be retired 2 years before he can be eligible for the NASCAR HoF.
INDIANAPOLIS MOTOR SPEEDWAY TRIBUTE TO TONY STEWART
He was presented with a piece of the catch fence he climbed to the top of in 2005 after his win to collect his checkered flag. It was neatly put into a picture frame accompanied with several pictures of that night of him climbing the fence. I watched that race and remember it well. He was quite a bit thinner back then. He was told if he wins the race this Sunday and if he climbs the fence again they’ll cut a piece off of that one for him too. Mmmmmmmmm…..something to work for I suppose. A challenge or a dare for sure.
Stewart will be sporting that lovely helmet with AJ Foyt’s name on it during the race.
NEW HAMPSHIRE RECAP
Happy lobstah day indeed Matt Kenseth. That huge lobster is real and it’s part of the trophy which Kenseth won. The day started out with Johnson on the pole and he didn’t have it long. By lap 3 Ky Bu took it away.
The first caution was a competition caution on lap 36 due to rain that morning. Ky Bu came out first. Harvick’s crew had air gun issues. So he had to march to the front the hard way. It took 10 laps to pick off 4 spots to get to 10th place.
On lap #88 Truex takes the lead from Ky Bu. Harvick has made it to 5th. Johnson has fallen to 10th.
Lap 100 a caution comes out for Buescher spinning. Truex comes out first and Harvick AGAIN has a bad stop. Harvick expressed his feelings to the crew chief. Truex takes the green flag in the lead with Ky Bu right behind him.
On lap 172 Ky Bu takes the lead back from Truex. Harvick has made his way back up to 7th.
On lap 219 a caution for debris comes out. Truex is the first one out. then Ky Bu – Kenseth – Keselowski & Harvick.
Truex takes off but Kenseth is not letting him get away. Ten laps later Kenseth takes the lead.
On lap 264 another debris caution. Truex reports he has a broken shifter. His crew hands him vise grips in the hopes that he can hook then on and shift. But he then reports he has no clutch or transmission. Johnson slid through his pit stall and had to back up. Hamlin stayed out and takes the lead on the restart.
Hamlin isn’t out front for long before Kenseth takes the lead.
Another caution with 29 to go. Elliott and Bowman have wrecked. KuBu and Elliott had rubbed into each other during the restart and Elliotts tire went down because of the contact.
Kenseth takes the lead but then with 20 to go KuBu’s tire goes down. Caution. Truex is still trying to keep his car in the race.
On the next restart with 17 to go Larson takes a spin off Kahne’s bumper. Truex’s team tries one more time to connect the vise grips to the shifter.
Kenseth takes the restart in first and holds on for the win. Side note : Kenseth flunked post race laser inspection. He keeps the win but loses 15 points in the Chase.
Top 15 finishers – Kenseth – Stewart – Logano – Harvick – Biffle – McMurray – Newman – KyBu – Hamlin – Stenhouse – Blaney – Johnson – Dillon – Danica – Keselowski
THE BRICKYARD PREVIEW
KyBu has the pole. He also had the pole for the Xfinity race on Saturday….and the win. He led all but one of the laps. Looks like Toyota is dialed in. Harvick was in the Xfinity race and came in 2nd. Menard was 3rd and Larson was 4th with Logano the last Cup driver coming in 8th.
The green flag drops at 3:19 pm EST. The worst time of the day. I think we’ll see some drivers get carted off at the end of the race. If it’s 95 degree with major humidity outside the car then add about 30 to 40 more degrees inside the car. I really think they need to rethink the time of this race. Last year it was overcast and a thermometer in Casey Mears car read 139 degrees. Imagine what it will be today.
This track was built with IndyCars in mind. It’s fast. Last year we saw Gordon end up 42nd due to a wreck early. Hamlin had his hood fly up and smash his window. Dillon was penalized for being too fast on pit road. When he came in for his pass through he sped again. DOH!!!! Lots of tire issues plus beatin’ & bangin’ on the restarts led to a GWC and KyBu’s win. So will he win today? Top 5 in last practice – KyBu – Harvick – Larson – Newman – Edwards. Most laps in practice was Hamlin with 57.
JOHNSON – The red vest Lowes driver starts 13th today. Not sure why he’s been struggling though. Time to turn it around but probably not today.
HARVICK – Starts 7th today. Got a 2nd place Saturday during the Xfinity race. He was 3rd here last year. Top 10. Wondering how many free Bloomin’ Onions have been given out because of all the top 10s Harvick has had between last year and now?
KY BU – Dude is on a roll. Top 10
TRUEX – Mark Martin tweeted during the race that this guy had more bad luck than anyone he ever knew. That’s saying something coming from Martin. Still, I’ll say Top 10.
NEWMAN – Starts 6th today. Man on a mission. I believe he’s driving for his job. Childress has not announced his line up for next year. Looks like Newman will be odd man out when Childress’s other grandson Ty comes up to Cup. Top 10
STEWART – Needs some more cushion to stay in the top 30 in points. He’s got his W though. Top 10
HAMLIN – This guy has things happen to him. Like the hood pins not being on right last year. He should be in the top 10 mix but as per my usual advise I say consult your local psychic.
LOGANO – Despite starting 14th I’ll say Top 10.
KU BU – Top 10
KENSETH – Top 10
KESELOWSKI – Top 10
GORDON – He’s driving an unfamiliar car, he hasn’t driven a race car since December, he’s with a new crew, and the heat will be ferocious. I don’t expect a top 10. The odds are stacked against him but I will say top 15.
LARSON – He starts 10th today. Top 10
BARGAIN PICKS FOR NASCAR LIVE
David Ragan – He’s $8.75 and starts 27th. Top 25
Landon Cassill – He’s $9.75 and starts 33rd. Top 30
Casey Mears – He’s $9 and starts 34th. Top 25
Ms Danica – She’s #13.75 and starts 24th. Top 30
Michael Annett – He’s 5.50 and starts 38th. Top 30
Tony Stewart is $13.25, Kyle Larson is $22, Ryan Newman is $22.75 and Jeff Gordon is $25.50. These guys might help you out. Swinging the top players at $27 is rough so if you can swing 2 mid priced and a cheapy, you just might go far.
So Gabbers and others, that’s my story for this week. Everybody stay safe, hydrated, sheltered…
And I’m outta here…..=^!^=
