Give it away. Give it away. Give it away now. Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. Still a tad bit too warm for me here and Autumn was official as of Thursday the 22nd. My AC is still cranked. On the bright side, it was pay week. I’ve been trying to start my days with gratitude. After I hit that snooze button I hug my pillow and think of something I’m grateful for or just say thank you for letting me wake up. Really helps to get the day started on a good note.
So what of the land of Left Turns?
KURT BUSCH’S EX GIRLFRIEND PATRICIA DRISCOLL CHARGED
On Wednesday Driscoll turned herself in and was held till her arraignment with US Magistrate Judge G Michael Harvey at 1:45 pm. She was brought up on 2 counts each of wire fraud, mail fraud, and tax evasion and 1 count of attempts to interfere with Internal Revenue laws.
Driscoll was in charge of a military charity and between the years of 2006 and 2014 she misused $599,000 in donations on meals, travel, parking tickets, makeup and gifts.
She acknowledged the charges and that she understood them but pleaded not guilty. Driscoll had to surrender her passport and must stay within 50 miles of Washington DC.
CHARLOTTE PROTESTERS ATTACK NASCAR HALL OF FAME
Vandals attacked the NASCAR Hall of Fame leaving a street sign thrown through a window. They tried to pry out another window but were unsuccessful at getting into the building and it’s exhibits. Near by restaurants were attacked as well. A report of all the damage to the Hall of Fame will be coming soon.
PENALTY TALK AFTER CHICAGOLAND RACE
So Martin Truex and Jimmie Johnson did not pass post race laser inspection. In fact Truex’s infraction was a miniscule fraction of an infraction. His left rear was .01 off of spec. If this would’ve stuck Truex could’ve lost 15 points and Johnson would’ve lost 10 points for his infraction.
Truex would still have his win though so the -15 points wouldn’t be much of a penalty for him. I have been complaining about this all year. Others I see on Twitter have had the same complaint. If you make winning a part of the Chase ticket then a team will do what it has to to get that win because it gets you in. Post race laser inspection fail be damned.
So now NASCAR says they’re going to do something about solidifying its post race inspection penalty structure for infractions stemming from the laser inspection station. I read what they’re going to do but it’s fuzzy to say the least. I have no clue. There’s no definitive line as usual. They talked a good talk though but no definition of the line.
So it leaves the door open to interpretation by the governing body to put their foot down or not. It fuels the conspiracy theorists who are pointing at another Toyota planned championship.
In the mean time the drivers started doing serpentine moves you see on a road course after the races. During yellow flags drivers swerve back and forth to scrub the track dirt like bits of rubber off their tires just before the green flag drops so their tires get a better grip. Now they do this after the race. It’s been explained that the teams bring the tolerances of the adjustments so close that with the drivers going in circles for hours it pushes the car down on the left side more. So to get the car back to spec the crew chiefs are telling their drivers to not forget to swerve after the race as they come back to pit road after their cool down lap so they can make it through tech.
This explains Denny Hamlin and Kyle Larson both burning their cars into the ground after their wins recently. Although NASCAR said Hamlin’s victory celebration was excessive but Larson’s was just fine. Difference? I saw none except Larson stood on the roof of his car which nobody has done for year. It’s a huge NO NO. It’s that governing body choosing to point out wrong doing or not as they see fit. No wonder the conspiracy theorists are yacking. NASCAR just fuels that fire with their decisions.
So we’ll see what happens at New Hampshire today.
Ky Bu had the pole for this race. Harvick had unapproved changes on his car so it was a start from the back for him. Larson got a new transmission so he too started from the rear.
Not to worry, both Harvick and Larson were making moves toward the front right off the bat. By lap 20 Harvick was 10th and Larson was 18th.
Lap 22 Truex takes the lead.
But Harvicks march to the front came to an abrupt end. During green flag pit stops a tire rolled across pit road from Almirola’s pit stall. It brought out the caution just as Harvick and Johnson were on pit road. Johnson made it to the line just in time to stay on the lead lap. Harvick missed it by 6 inches. He would be stuck one lap down for the rest of the race. Which fueled my inner conspiracy theorist but we’ll let that go for the time being.
So Johnson is now leading them to green because he got his stop done and stayed on the lead lap. All the others that didn’t pit came in.
After the restart Truex has to pit for a flat tire. He’s now a lap down ahead of Harvick. Hamlin is afraid his motor is going. Edwards is complaining about a vibration. At 74 laps in your top 5 are Johnson – Ky Bu – Keselowski – Elliott – Bowman
At 100 laps Hamlin says his motor is changing tones. Green flag pit stops begin again and Johnson maintains the lead afterwards.
On lap 181 Elliott takes the lead from Johnson who after another green flag stop says his car is now evil to drive. Top 5 is Elliott – Johnson – Keselowski – Hamlin – Logano
Lap 193 a caution for debris and yet again Harvick misses the Lucky Dog. It goes to Stewart. Elliott keeps the lead.
With 40 laps to go green flag pit stops start. Johnson gets dinged for speeding on pit road. It sends him back to 20th.
Elliott still leads after pit stops and with 5 to go McDowell blows a right front tire. Stewart is Lucky Dog again. Truex gets off pit road first but Blaney, Kahne and Edwards stayed out.
Blaney leads them to the green flag but Truex makes it 3 wide and passes everyone on the top. And with that Truex wins.
Top 15 Finishers – Truex – Logano – Elliott – Blaney – Keselowski – Hamlin – Kahne – Ky Bu – Kenseth – Bowman – McMurray – Johnson – Ku Bu – Dillon – Edwards
All drivers finished just like last years race.
NEW HAMPSHIRE PREVIEW
It’s only fitting that we go to New Hampshire for the first race of Fall. This track has very little banking. Driver talent is needed here. I’m not sure what the weather is like that far up. I know it rained a bit this weekend there. But they did get qualifying in and Mr Edwards got the pole.
KENSETH – He’s looking for Lobster #3. He won the July race after Truex who was leading broke his shifter off and last years September race which was a fuel mileage steal from Harvick who dominated that race. Odds are not in favor of a 3rd win but a Top 10 would be in order.
HARVICK – Led 216 laps last year when he had to pit for fuel and let Kenseth have the W. Want a free Bloomin Onion on Monday? He’s most likely going to get you one. Top 10
KESELOWSKI – In 10 races here he’s got an average finish of 6.5. Top 10
JOHNSON – He led 118 laps last week. Is he back? He was 6th last year but 12th in July. I’m going with Top 10
TRUEX – Led 123 laps in July. He was leading until 44 to go when he reported that his shifter fell off. Top 10
LOGANO – Always lurking towards the end. Top 10
NEWMAN – 10th in July and 7th in September of last year. Top 10
HAMLIN – He should but you know the drill, call your local psychic.
LARSON – He’s on a tear and he was fastest in final practice. Top 10
BIFFLE – My Dark Horse pick for a Top 10
And now for something cute and upbeat and utterly positive…..
And with that, I’m outta here……=^!^=
