Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. Got a Stevie Ray Vaughn concert on You Tube cranked and it’s quite the blustery day here in PA. Took my breath away at times. Finally came indoors because it was that bad. The leaf raking will have to wait. Still enjoying tomatoes. Not ripening well but a few days on the window sill and it’s sandwich time. Found a neato trick. If you have a rice cooker, put a tomato on top of the rice just before you close it up. Mix after the rice is done.
So what of the land of Left Turns?
LOTS OF BREAST CANCER PINK STUFF
Danica joined breast cancer survivors to paint the curbing at the Martinsville Speedway pink.
Also on Saturday Harvick, Kahne and McMurray met up with 25 breast cancer survivors to give rides on the Talladega Speedway in the pink Chevy SS pace car. This week Chevy will give $350 to American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Program for every pace lap the car makes. This might add up. It is Talladega after all.
GEENVILLLE BIKE RACE
So what does a race car driver do while he waits to qualify his race car? He goes for a bike ride. Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth decided to enter the Hincape Gran Fondo Cycle Race in Greenville, SC.
Members of the US & Olympic teams are also among the 2300 cyclists from 18 different countries.
There are 3 routes to take. A 80 mile Gran with 8100 feet of climbing route or a 50 mile Media or the 15 mile Piccolo.
Johnson and Kenseth had only so much time to get through their ride. They’re expected to qualify their cars at Talladega too.
Proceeds from the bike race go to help Greenville County Meals On Wheels.
NEWS OF DALE JR
He may not have raced since the summer but he’s been busy. Someone found the roof off of a dirt car his dad raced back in 1982. He was quite grateful to get this and add it to his collection.
Also in Dale Jr news, he’ll be joining Joe Moore and Jeff Striegle in the Barney Hall MRN Booth during the radio broadcast for Talladega. He’ll also go in the NBC broadcast booth later in the race and join his ex crew chief Steve Latarte along with Rick Allen and Jeff Burton for more analyses. Look for him in the Martinsville broadcast as well.
Dale Jr says he’s excited to see things from a different view. He really enjoyed commentating on a Xfinity Series race earlier in the year.
That would be Mr Harvick taking the checkered flag. He also got his ticket into the next round of the Chase. It was a very hot & windy day at the track. Ku Bu had to start from the back due to wrecking his primary car in the last practice. Matt Kenseth had the pole.
Kenseth led them to the green flag and kept that lead for many laps. Lap 36 is a caution for a wreck which saves Hamlin who is a Chaser. He’s having issues with the front end.
Kenseth retakes the lead. Logano has trash on the grill. Also a Chaser. He lets Stewart pass him so he can use Stewart’s car to tuck up behind and suck the trash off. It works. Now he has to cool his motor down. Tragedy averted.
Lap 82 sees green flag pit stops start. When they’re all done it is reported that Truex is 10 gallons short on fuel due to a faulty valve on the gas can. He must come in 33 laps later and he’s now off cycle with everyone else.
Truex pits on lap 115 and is 3 gallons short this time but a caution comes out for Wise in the wall. Kenseth is still leading.
Lap 126 Harvick finally takes the lead. Ku Bu who started in the back has now made it to 14th and says he’s side ways loose and plowing in the center. Truex is still having gas can issues. Stewart is discussing a vibration with his crew chief.
Lap 165 Truex has to pit. On lap 169 Elliott uses Biffle as a pick to pass Harvick for the lead. Green flag pit stops start right afterwards.
Lap 177 Larson scrapes the wall and brings out a caution. Elliott and Kahne have right rear issues. Edwards takes the lead.
Caution comes out on lap 190 for a Chaser. Keselowski is in the grass. He drifted up in front of Hamlin who hit him in the rear. Keselowski is now in the garage with extensive front end damage.
On lap 220 Keselowski comes back on track with a new front end but can’t even make a lap when his car starts smoking. Back to the garage and there’s a caution on lap 221 for clean up. Dillon takes only 2 tires so he’s now leading. Hamlin gets a penalty for an uncontrolled tire in the pits.
Edwards takes the lead from Dillon. Two tires is not the way to go but it did get him track position.
With 34 laps to go a caution comes out for Smith who has pancaked the right side of his car. Hamlin gets another penalty. This time too many crew members over the wall.
Edwards brings them to the green flag but Harvick takes the lead. He gets away because Edwards and Ky Bu are fighting over 2nd for most of the remaining laps. By the time Edwards finally gets 2nd from Ky Bu it’s too late to try and over come the 2 second lead Harvick has. Harvick wins and gets his Chase ticket into the next round.
Top 15 Finishers – Harvick – Edwards – Logano – Johnson – Ky Bu – Dillon – Bowman – Allmendinger – Kenseth – Kahne – Truex – Newman – Ku Bu – Blaney – Hamlin
Guys in danger of elimination – Logano 3045 pts – Dillon 3045 pts – Hamlin 3039 pts – Keselowski 3038 pts – Elliott 3020 pts. These guys are on the very bottom.
It’s superspeedway time folks. We’re at the 2.66 mile quad oval rolling junkyard race. It’s a high speed rolling crap shoot. That’s pretty much what you should do when picking your fantasy picks this week. Shit happens fast and when it happens a lot of cars are involved.
KESELOWSKI – He won the May race here. He does seem to know how to be some where near the front in the end. He had a really bad finish last week. If he wants to get into the next round he needs a win or everyone else in his way to run into trouble. Starts 2nd today. Top 10
KU BU – Had a mediocre finish last week. He sits 5th with 3062 points. That’s only 17 points ahead of Logano. Got to stay out of trouble. He had a top 10 in May and in last years October race. Top 10
TRUEX – Mediocre finish last week due to the faulty gas can nozzle. He’s 6th with 3058 points. He’s got pole position and needs that win. Top 10
KENSETH – 2nd with 3074 points. He could float into the next round with a good finish. He starts 3rd today. Top 10
KY BU – 3rd man with 3074 points. He could make it without a win if he stays out of trouble. Top 10.
DILLON – Had a 3rd here in May. Pit strategy got him a 6th place finish last week. Like Keselowski, he has to win to get in or everyone else in the way has to have trouble. Top 10
LOGANO – Last years winner in October. He needs a win to get in. Top 10.
BLANEY – Not a Chaser but I think he’ll sneak into the Top 10.
EDWARDS – 4th with 3069 points. Probably a tad bit grumpy about his 2nd place finish last week. Top 10.
STEWART – It’s his last race here. No he’s not a Chaser now but I’m calling a Top 10.
Why no Johnson or Harvick in my picks? Because they have their tickets to the next round. They won’t push the issue. If they have the chance they might but they can relax knowing their place is assured.
So that’s all I have this week. Hope all is well in Gabville.
And I’m outta here….=^!^=
