Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. It’s raid the kids candy stash season. I’m going trick or treatin’ with the grandkids and I plan on snitching a few pieces of the loot. The leaves are turning and falling as well. I made a batch of apple butter and ended up canning 8 half pints. So I got that stashed. Got a Tom Petty show on You Tube. Show sounds good but all you can see is the back of the band. Obviously recorded from the balcony.
So what of the land of Left Turns?
Here’s a tid bit from the land of Stage & Stomp. John Force hit a track record as well as a personal best at Vegas on Friday during qualifying. He hit 331.94 mph. None of the dragsters hit that speed. Yeah!!!! Go John Go!!!
NASCAR NOT MAKING CREW CHANGE
NASCAR was toying with taking a crew member away from the over the wall pit crew. After consulting with the owners council it was decided that they’d keep it at 6 over the wall guys on pit road.
In my opinion they could find way better cost saving measures to help out the teams.
BATTLE OF BRISTOL A SUCCESS
The college game at Bristol Speedway between Tennessee and Virginia Tech in September was a rousing success. Revenues for the 3rd quarter were 16% more than last year at this time. The game brought in $5 to $6 million.
So I’m pretty sure that Texas will be checking into hosting a game for sure. And of course other tracks will be too. Tracks need to be versatile these days. Speaking of versatile…
SPEEDWAY CHRISTMAS IS BACK AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY
The Halloween pumpkins haven’t even rotted yet and Christmas is being assembled. Charlotte Motor Speedway is setting up their 3.75 miles of 3 million lights around the track for their light show extravaganza. The infield will have a Christmas village, petting zoo, Bethlehem Village, wagon rides and photos with Santa. Also there will be movie nights on the big screen. Folks can sit in their cars to watch the Christmas movies. Call for more info.
NASCAR LIMITING CUP DRIVER EXTRA RACES
Much complaining about Cup drivers double dipping into the Xfinity and truck Series has gone on for years. NASCAR is finally going to do something about it. Starting in 2017 any Cup driver with 5 years in Cup will be limited to 10 races in the Xfinity Series and 7 in the truck series. No Dash 4 Cash races and they can’t be in any of the final 8 races of the schedule in Xfinity or truck.
The argument for the Cup drivers in the lower series is that if you’re an up and comer then proving yourself up against one is what you do to get attention. The argument against is that the Cup drivers win almost all the races.
I personally don’t care. The Cup drivers only get points in the Cup Series. They get to keep the prize money and the trophies but don’t collect points towards the championship.
Truex had the pole and off he went. Keselowski grabbed the lead in lap 2. A disturbing sight was that Kenseth, Edwards & Ky Bu went right to the back of the field before the race even started. And that’s where they stayed all race long. They had the points they needed to advance to the next round so they sand bagged. BOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
Any way Truex got the lead back by lap 13. Keselowski took it back next lap. And the Gibbs 3 are still sand bagging.
Elliott grabs the lead on lap 27. Keselowski takes it back on lap 27. And the Gibbs 3 are still sand bagging.
On lap 38 green flag pit stops start. A huge pack comes down pit road. Dillon makes it in with a flat tire. Logano leaves with the jack still under the left side of the car. He can’t dislodge it and manages to go the whole way around the track at speed with it still there.
Logano makes it back to his stall. They dislodge the jack and give him new tires. Hamlin is burnt for speeding on pit road. It’s his 9th speeding penalty this year. And the Gibbs 3 wait for everyone to pit and then they come in.
Lap 42 Truex’s motor goes poof. He would finish dead last and be the first one eliminated today.
Keselowski is leading. But here comes Biffle. He takes the lead but has to give it up about a dozen laps later due to trash on the grill. His temps were too high and he needed to get up behind somebody to free the trash off his grill.
Keselowski gets the lead back after another green flag pit stop cycle. And the Gibbs 3 are still sand bagging.
Lap 114 there’s a caution for a wreck. Hamlin comes out of the pits first and his team mates that are sand bagging come in just before the restart to top off their tanks.
Hamlin leads but just can’t hold off Keselowski. On lap 127 your top 5 is Keselowski, Blaney, Logano, Hamlin & Harvick.
On lap 142 Keselowski reports trash on the grill. On lap 144 he lets Blaney pass him so he can get trash off the grill. It’s too late. The higher temps take out Keselowski’s motor. He is the 2nd Chaser to be eliminated today.
After pit stops Logano now leads. Harvick is 2nd. He tries to get the lead but the caution comes right back out.
Logano maintains the lead on the restart with Harvick making moves but not quite getting there. Johnson drops back to help Elliott but just can’t quite get connected.
Logano wins and 4 drivers are eliminated. Dillon, Truex, Elliott & Keselowski do not make it to the next round.
Round of 8 is – Johnson – Ku Bu – Logano – Kenseth – Ky Bu – Harvick – Edwards – Hamlin
Top 15 Finishers – Logano – Scott – Hamlin – Ku Bu – Stenhouse – Larson – Harvick – Almirola – Dillon – Allmendinger – Blaney – Elliott – Menard – Newman – Biffle
NOTE – Still pissed that Kenseth, Edwards & Ky Bu hung out in the back all race long. After the Waltrip Racing fiasco years ago NASCAR made up a 100% rule which meant you had to drive at 100% of your ability the whole race with the goal of getting the best possible finish in the event.
NASCAR says they didn’t violate the spirit of that rule. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT????????? Sorry but IMHO riding around in the back of the race never trying to get up front to mix it up with everyone else is in violation of that rule. Their team mate Hamlin raced for his spot in the next round. They did not.
It’s grandfather trophy time. Gordon has 9 and Johnson has 8. Close quarters racing with a freshly painted pink curb in a .526 mile paper clip shaped track. It’s fast, up close and personal. Last year Kenseth got real personal with Logano. After leading 207 laps Kenseth drove Logano into the wall out of revenge. So this is the track that you can’t get away if somebody has it out for you.
HARVICK – He’s in the Round of 8. I feel another Bloomin’ Onion Monday coming on. Top 10
JOHNSON – Starts 3rd today. Did I mention he has 8 grandfather clocks? Top 10
GORDON – Last race ever he says. If he lead 64 laps today he will be the 6th driver in Cup to lead more than 12,000 laps or more in their career. Top 10
LOGANO – Led 207 laps last year before his mishap with Kenseth. Starts 2nd today. Top 10
STEWART – It’s his last race at Martinsville. Top 10
TRUEX – Luck can’t stay with him long but TOP 10
NEWMAN – He finds his way up to the top 10 in the short tracks. TOP 10
HAMLIN – Good at the half milers. TTTTTT…you know I can’t say it. Consult your local psychic.
KAHNE – He’s another one. Should be but….
KY BU – Top 10
Welp, that’s all I got folks. Tom Petty is doing his encore and I need a shower. Hope you’re all doing well.
And I’m outta here…..=^!^=
