RUSH is cranked and I’m thinking what a weird week. Castro is now gone. Thought he was gone years ago. Just didn’t believe them when they said he was sick. Much celebration by the Cuban refuges here in the states. Ding dong. The witch is dead type stuff. Then we lost Florence Henderson, and Ron Glass (Detective Harris on Barney Miller). Then Kanye went mad on stage and the last I heard he was carted off to the psych ward.
Hope everyones Thanksgiving dinner was good. I worked as usual. I haven’t watched much football but I got my fill of the NFL this week. Never packed so many NFL hoodies, NFL, wind brakers, NFL baseball style jackets or NFL down filled coats. It was insane to say the least. I think 2/3’s of America bought a jacket or hoodie.
So what of the land of Left Turns?
Well Jimmie won his 7th championship. Or as he writes it…Se7en. That’s 12 for Hendrick Motorsports. And this is how he did it.
Harvick had the pole for this one. The track was sold out. At the last minute Jimmie Johnson was sent to the back to start the race because NASCAR didn’t like what they saw when they did a visual of the car on the starting grid. After a quick fix, Jimmie’s car was on track and heading to the back.
As a tribute to Tony Stewart’s last Cup race ever, he drove down pit road by himself giving high 5’s to every pit crew member and then did a parade lap at the head of the field before dropping back to his starting spot in the field.
Then Harvick led them to the green flag. He kept the lead. By lap 10 Johnson was up to 19th.
Lap 26 saw the first caution for Blaney being in the wall. Hamlin totally missed his pit stall and had to keep going. He came back in on the 2nd pass. Harvick maintained the lead with Edwards, Keselowski, Ky Bu & Kenseth rounding out the top 5.
On the restart Harvick & Edwards fought for a lap or 2 till Edwards got the lead. By lap 34 Johnson had fought his way back to the front. He was now 8th. A lap later Harvick took back the lead.
Lap 48 top 5 is Harvick – Edwards – Logano – Ky Bu – Johnson. So the 4 Chase drivers are 2, 3, 4 & 5.
Lap 86 Logano takes the lead on a restart from Harvick. Edwards is right behind. By lap 93 Edwards takes the lead back.
On lap 118 Larson drives right on by Edwards on the high side for the lead.
After green flag pit stops Edwards leads but Larson works his way back u to take the lead on lap 127. These 2 trade the lead several times. With Larson keeping the lead for long stretches.
Mean while, Logano and Edwards are fighting for the championship right behind our leader Larson. Johnson has fallen to 12th.
With 61 to go Blaney again smacks the wall. The right side is now pancaked. It’s pit road strategy time. Larson is out front first. Logano – Ky Bu – Harvick – Edwards & Johnson follow. All can now make it on fuel. The 4 Chasers are in the top 6 spots.
Larson takes the lead with the Chasers fight for position behind him.
With 15 to go a caution comes out for Lupton’s flat tire. It’s the money stop. Do you dare to pit? They all do and again Larson comes out first. Edwards, Logano, Harvick, Johnson & Ky Bu follow. All 4 Chasers are grouped together on the restart.
Larson gets a good start and leaves the pack. Edwards is blocking to keep Logano behind him. Edwards, Keselowski, Logano and Johnson all head to the bottom of the track. Logano hits Edwards rear and it’s on. Edwards is now in the wall and spins off, Keselowski gets away briefly but wrecks, Truex gets in it and is now on fire. Johnson and Ky Bu get away undamaged but Logano has a bent fender. Red flag.
During the red flag all cars are stopped on the track while NASCAR cleans up all the debris and sorts out the running order. Edwards is now out of his heavily damaged car. He walks to Logano’s pit box and shakes the crew chief’s hand, apologizes for wrecking Logano and tells him to tell Logano to go get it.
After pit stop when the red flag is lifted, the running order is Larson – Harvick – Ky Bu – Johnson – Kenseth for your top 5. Logano needed repairs to his fender.
With 5 to go it’s restart but Stenhouse wrecks so now it’s GWC time. For some crazy reason Ky Bu decides to pit for tires. So now it’s between Johnson and Logano.
Larson leads them to green but Johnson shoots out to the lead. Logano follows but drops back. Two laps later Johnson is your 2016 Sprint Cup champion.
Top 15 finishers – Johnson – Larson – Harvick – Logano – McMurray – Ky Bu – Kenseth – Allmendinger – Hamlin – McDowell – Bowman – Dillon – Ku Bu – Menard – Scott
So somebody thought Johnson needed extra toilet paper at his house besides the Gatorade bath he got in victory lane.
So this is what 7 championships looks like. Rick Hendrick now has 12 Cup championships as an owner. I would call this a dynasty.
They certainly were prepared with having goggles at the ready. After Jimmie won his championship and race Tony Stewart visited him in victory lane where Jimmie gave him his race helmet for Tony’s helmet collection. The helmet had pictures of Petty and Dale Sr with the #7 on the back. Guess it brought him luck.
I’ll bring silly season news next week. Yup, I was late again this weeks too. It’s been a mad house at work and I had a tooth pulled to make things ready for a bridge. The extraction did not go so well. I’m a worn out and hurting puppy. I hope all of you are doing well. See you next week.
And I’m outta here……=^!^=
