HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!! Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. Tom Petty is free falling on my iPod and I’m finally feeling human enough to write. The flu has taken it’s good old time leaving. My family just kept passing it around. The lingering cough is still present but I can breath now. Add that to all the required OT my employer thought I should do and I was extremely taxed. They’re still piling it on. My off days are no longer my off days. Very frustrating.
I see that my cyber buddy Harvey Dakota has passed in my absence from The Gab. He asked me a long time ago to be his cyber buddy and I thought it odd back then but I said yes. Now surfing the internet and interacting with folks on said net has become common place and I rather enjoy it. Harvey always had a story to tell. I really loved his responses to my blogs too. I will miss him. All of December thoughts of him would pop up from time to time and I would wonder how he was. I will miss you my cyber buddy, Harvey. Hope all is well for you now.
So what of the land of Left Turns?
January 10th through the 14th was the 31st Annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals. We had several NASCAR notables participating. Christopher Bell won the main event last night. Last years winner RICCO ABREU came in 11th. RICKY STENHOUSE JR 16th, KYLE LARSON and JUSTIN ALLGAIER didn’t qualify for the main event.
With over 800 participants over the week of heat races to qualify for the main event you know this win is a big deal. I think this picture says it.
MICHAEL WALTRIP has gotten himself a ride in the Daytona 500. He’ll be in the #55 AaronsInc Toyota Camry for Premium Motorsports.
DALE JR and KURT BUSCH are now married. They’re both on honeymoon as I write this. Both are ready to get back to NASCAR racing. Only 42 days till the Daytona 500 you know.
KEVIN HARVICK is slated to be in the FOX broadcast booth to call 8 races this year. His first one will be the Xfinity Daytona race.
He says he’s excited to be in the booth calling the races, figuring out what’s going on and watching the up and coming talent. Being in a booth is some where he’s planning on being after he hangs up his helmet in the future.
RICHARD PETTY is to be inducted into the North Carolina Drag Racing Hall of Frame on February 18th. He drag raced the Outlaw 43 Jr Plymouth Baracuda from “64 to “66. NASCAR had banned the 426 Chrysler Hemi engine from stock car racing. So Petty took it to the stage & stomp circuit. The restored car will be in attendance along with Petty.
TONY STEWART may be opening his 414 acres in Indiana to hunting (deer & turkey) and fishing parties. A new zoning law was passed in Bartholomew County that would allow a bed & breakfast along with the high fenced hunting.
I guess we need to keep the money flowing now that we quit NASCAR. He will be racing the sprint cars. He’s already booked for many races.
May 2013 saw DAVID RAGAN get a big push from then team mate DAVID GILLILAND driving for Front Row Motorsports to win at Talladega. A triumph for the 2 Davids who beat the big guys. This low budget team stole one from the Goliath’s of Cup racing and it was the only win for owner BOB JENKINS. This Christmas was extra special in that his team got a hold of that winning car that he thought went to the crusher and they restored it for him. What an awesome Christmas present.
Here’s a rule update for 2017. The rear spoiler will go from 3.5″ to 2.35″. A roof hatch will be manditory for cars in the Cup and Xfinity series at Daytona and Talladega. All other races optional. Restrictor plate holes will be 7/8”. The driver foot box will be strengthened. It will add 20 lbs to the car. NASCAR wants it at Daytona and Talladega but optional at other race tracks. They are hoping teams will just do it at all tracks.
I personally think teams will think of other uses for that 20 lb difference in weight. Those evil genius type crew chiefs can work out wonders with 20 lbs.
Big big big news coming out of the JGR garage. CARL EDWARDS has decided to hang up his helmet with 1 year on his contract. Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat? He was 10 laps from his first championship when the unthinkable happened. He wrecked on the restart while blocking his biggest competition. You’d think with a team on the verge like that he’d come back for another crack at the championship before he quit.
He cited 3 reasons for dropping out now. 1 – He was satisfied with his career. 2 – The sport takes up a lot of time and he needed time to devote to people and things more important to him. 3. His health. He’s still sharp and healthy and that’s how he wants to leave racing.
Personally I’m shocked and don’t know what to think. The conspiracy theorist in me says he got into trouble or he was paid off to quit so that DANIEL SUAREZ could move up into his ride or he’s sick or wifie said it’s time or I leave. Whatever the reason, I hope he’s ok and that he truly is happy with his decision. He was almost in tears during his media conference. Hard to tell what the real skinny is after watching that.
But with CARL’s decision being what it is, it opened up a seat in the #19 that had to be filled. DANIEL SUAREZ was called up from Xfinity Series to be given that ride. As you know DANIEL is the 2016 Xfinity Series Champion.
What a turn of events this is. I am still in awe and not knowing quite what to think.
So there ya have it folks. I can’t wait for the Daytona 500. Like I said above, 42 days to go.
And I’m outta here……..=^!^=
