Well it has been a week (March 9th) since the Free Agent signing frenzy began and the Jacksonville Jaguars hit the first day running. Did the first week meet the Jaguars fans expectations?
Here is my take on the signings:
The “Big Catch” was 6-8/300 DE Calais Campbell, literally a “Big Catch. Calais was the 2nd best free agent on the market who is noted for being highly disruptive and very athletic for a man his size. He can play the end and interior line. As noted on ESPN, “Campbell has a skill set unlike anyone else in the NFL. At 6’8, 282 pounds, he can move inside and out, set the edge. He was respected for his leadership and intelligence in Arizona, and should add quality veteran experience to a promising Jaguars defensive line group.” Since 2009 Campbell has averaged 7 sacks per season and was selected to the Pro Bowl twice. Campbell has started 120 of 138 games, 3 interceptions, 8 forced fumbles, fumbles recoveries, 1 touchdown and 56.5 sacks.
Calais Campbell’s contract is for 4 years, $60,000,000 of which $30,000,000 is guaranteed.
$6,000,000 million signing bonus.
In 2017 $9,000,000 and a cap hit of $10,500,000
In 2018 $15,000,000 and a cap hit of $16,500,000
In 2019 $12,000,000 and a cap hit of $15,000,000
In 2020 $15,000,000 and a cap hit of $18,000,000

The next big move was former Houston cornerback A.J. Bouye (6-0/190) who will replace the departed Devon House and Prince Amukamara. A.J. was the NFL ranked 5th best free agent on the market. Bouye has started 19 of 50 games (11 in 2016), 6 interceptions, 32 passes deflected (16 in 2016) and 1 sack. A.J. also had 2 interceptions in the playoffs for the Houston Texans. Bouye teaming with Ramsey should give the Jaguars one of the best cornerback duos in the NFL.
A.J. Bouye’s contract is for 5 years $67,500,000 of which $26,000,000 is guaranteed.
$10,000,000 signing bonus.
In 2017 $3,000,000 and a cap hit of $5,500,000.
In 2018-2021 $13,000,000 and a cap hit of $15,500,000.

Buffalo Bills DE Lerentee McCray (6-2/246) will join the team as a special team player and a rotational player on the defensive line. McCray, a former Gator, was an undrafted free agent when he signed with the Denver Broncos after the 2013 draft. Lerentee played under Jaguar’s special team coordinator Joe DeCammillis in 2015, Denver Broncos Super Bowl season. McCray has played in 37 games as a special team player and a reserve lineman.
Lerentee McCray’s contract is for 1 year, $1,000,000.
To replace Johnathan Cyprien Jacksonville signed safety Barry Church (6-1/222) from the Dallas Cowboys. Church has started 63 of 90 games with 5 interceptions, 16 passes deflected and 8 forced fumbles. Barry Church’s contract is for 4 years and $24 million.
RT/RG/OL Earl Watford (6-4/300), another former Arizona Cardinal was signed to bolster the offensive line. Watford started 13 of 32 games. Watford will add depth to the offensive line. Earl Watford’s contract is for 2 years and $6 million.
To add depth to the linebacker group, Jacksonville signed Audie Cole (6-4/246) from the Minnesota Vikings. Cole started 7 of 57 games, 2 passes deflected and 1 sack.
To add depth to the defensive tackle position, Jacksonville signed Stefan Charles (6-5/320) from the Detroit Lions. Charles has started 2 of 49 games and 5 sacks.
The Jaguars resigned the following players, Patrick Omameh and WR Bryan Walters.
As for Jacksonville Jaguar free agents, Luke Joeckel signed with the Seattle Seahawks, Jonathan Cyprien signed with the Tennessee Titans, Prince Amukamara signed with the Chicago Bears, Kelvin Beachum signed with the New York Jets and Devon House signed with the Green Bay Packers.
Overall, with the additions of Bouye and Church Jacksonville has a backfield that will last for years. Campbell solidifies the defensive line. With Jackson, Ngakoue and Campbell there will be pressure on opposing team’s quarterbacks. Plus the Jaguars added depth to the defensive line and linebacker positions.
This is a good group of players who are certainly better than the players the Jaguars let go in free agency. Well Done Jaguars!!
