Maybellene, why cancha be true? RIP Chuck Berry.Welcome Gabbers and others to my NASCAR Updates & Other Fast Stuff. We’ve gone from frigid temps and snow to it’s melting. Just glad the storm didn’t have the teeth they were calling for. Hope everyone else faired just as well.
So lets get right into the land of Left Turns.
So a recap of all the crazy rule and format changes is in order I guess. We start with the stages. All races are now in 3 stages. The first 2 stages the top 10 drivers get extra points. At the end of the race all the drivers get points according to their finish. Stage wins give drivers extra points toward the Chase races.
We now have a 5 minute clock. When a driver gets into an accident, if he can make it back to pit road he has 5 minutes to fix it and get out on the track. He must maintain speed when the race starts to reset the 5 minute clock. If extra crew members jump over the wall during that pit stop the car is automatically eliminated. Caught speeding on pit road and it’s minus 15 seconds. No new body panels can be put on. If a driver can not maintain speed or goes behind the wall the car is done for the day. However electrical or mechanical issues nonwreck related may be fixed in the garage and return to racing without penalty or 5 minute clock.
P1 thru P6 penalties are gone. It’s either P1 or P2. The P1 is the minor infraction. Things like practice time loss, pit selection loss and to the rear for the start being penalties. The P2 is the severe penalty. These include loss of driver and owner points, fines and crew chief suspensions.
No more Green White Checkers. It’s simply over time now and they get 3 tries at it.
Rear spoilers are reduced from 3.5″ to 2.35″.
Drivers must start the race with the tires they qualified on unless other wise stated or there is a tire defect.
There’s more but this is the condensed version.
LAS VEGAS RECAP
Keselowski had the pole but it was Truex that led 150 laps, won all 3 stages and got the max of 60 points. It propelled him to 4th in the points. Harvick wrecked out when his tire blew in the first stage. He went from 1st in the points to 8th. Just like that. We will be seeing wild swings in the points all year due to this new points award system.
It really brought out the wild behavior in Ky Bu too. He has had 2 really bad finishes in the first 2 races and the Atlanta finish would’ve been a top 5 which he badly needed but he got into it with Logano and lost. Off he spun into pit road and wound up 22nd. He sits 19th in the points. Ouch.
The accident happened when Keselowski lost power and started falling back. He stayed up top and Logano had Ky Bu door to door right behind him. At the last second Ky Bu swooped down and bumped Logano who almost lost it but gathered himself up only to hit Ky Bu in the door. Ky Bu spun out from there. After the race he walked to Logano’s pit stall and threw a punch at him. Team members jumped Ky Bu and there was a dawg pile. Officials broke it up.
NASCAR said no penalties or fines but had the 2 in for a conference. Ky Bu says Logano dumped him on purpose and Logano says not so. We shall see how this plays out going forward.
Top 15 Finishers – Truex – Larson – Elliott – Logano – Keselowski – Hamlin – Blaney – McMurray – Kenseth – Bowyer – Johnson – Kahne – Bayne – Almirola – Jones
Alrighty now. It’s a 1 mile oval track. We’ll be doing 312 laps. Stage 1 is ended at lap 75, Stage 2 at lap 150 and then we go to the 312 lap mark for Stage 3 unless of course there’s over time. Hamlin to the rear for changing his tires after qualifying. Ran over something and had a flat.
HARVICK – Won this race last year. Has the most wins here with 8 and 13 top 5’s. I think it will be a Bloomin’ Onion type of performance. Top 10
JOHNSON – Has 4 wins here and 15 top 5’s. He’s been really struggling the last 3 races but I’m betting he turns it around today. Top 10
HAMLIN – Albatross. Only explanation for what happens to him. He should be top 10 but as always I say consult your local psychic if you plan to pick him for your fantasy team.
LOGANO – On a roll. Has the pole. Top 10
KESELOWSKI – FAST in practice. Top 10
ELLIOTT – Last years rookie is continuing where he left off. Top 10
LARSON – Starts 4th today. Top 10
BLANEY – Quietly he brings the Wood Brothers Ford to good finishes. He’s 6th in the points. Top 10
KENSETH – Also a quiet work horse. Top 10
DALE JR – Starts 3rd today. He too has been struggling. Top 10
Welp, that’s all I have.
And I’m outta here…..=^!^=
