MLB vs. NBA. So as I’ve said repeatedly lately, it’s July. But today I’m wondering this – how is it that Baseball (who is the only sport actually playing right now) is second fiddle to the NBA Draft and Free Agency?
So are we to the point where actual action on the field no longer matters and that speculation about next year is more important than the games on the field right now? It sure seems that way.
Here is what I don’t get – there ain’t anybody going to beat the Golden State Warriors anytime soon. In fact the only team that can beat the Golden State Warriors is – well – the Golden State Warriors, and that remains to be seen starting in October.
So why is there such attention on an NBA offseason over the MLB? Look at what you’re missing.
- Boston and New York are back on top of the AL Least.
- Kansas City and Minny are still hanging in the AL Central with everybody’s favorite – Cleveland.
- Houston is poised to have an EPIC season in terms of wins.
- Milwaukee is 3.5 games up in the NL Central?
- Arizona is playing .600 ball and still 4.5 games behind LA?
- Max Scherzer is having a 1.94 ERA
- Scherzer and Chris Sale already have 160+ strike outs – AND IT’S ONLY JULY!!!
- Clayton Kershaw already has 13 wins.
- Aaron Judge is gonna have 30 HR before the all-star break.
- A ton of players already have 60+ RBI’s.
Oh, notice I haven’t even talked about the trade winds blowing, media accusations of the ball being juiced, or just the fact that a day at the park is a nice way to spend the day.
I refuse to believe that Baseball is passe. I went to the HOF back in May and it was busy. I see tons of ball caps and shirts, I see a lot of people at games, both in MLB and MiLB.
But yet you can’t get a talking head to discuss Baseball – at least the ones I listen to, and that’s a shame because I believe that Baseball has done a wonderful job reinventing itself and becoming more relevant outside of Boston and New York.
So how is it that Baseball can’t get any traction? Is it because the media has spent so much money on the NFL and NBA that they just don’t have the ability to stay with Baseball? Is being good and behaving passe and not worthy of the media’s time?
NFL. No sooner do I laud the NFL for staying out of trouble and out of our hair, some idiot has to go out and get arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Damien Wilson (a LB in Dallas) is the cat. And by the way, what is going on in Dallas – do they not teach that defense that behavior off the field is just as important as discipline on the field?
I read somewhere that James Harrison is still kicking for Pittsburgh, but damn if that dude ain’t a physical specimen. Good for him to keep on keeping on.
I actually read a story about the soon-to-be Las Vegas Raiders, who plan to have their fans park three miles away from their new planned stadium to get to the game. Ummm yeah, that’ll work – making customers paying premium to watch a game in September to be 3 miles away when it’s 3000 degrees.
And by the way… I used to love to peruse the sports web sites to enjoy actual coverage of sports, but now they’ve changed. It just doesn’t seem to be user friendly.
