Let me be the last to wish a very belated Happy Father’s Day to all the dad’s out there. As we make our way through what is now the second half of June, we are marching towards the down period of sports, but there’s still a lot going on:
MLB. Houston is the hottest team in the league right now going all ten of their last ten, while those dirty Dodgers are 8-2. Meanwhile, Baltimore has lost eight in a row and is now 1-9 over their last ten.
- Milwaukee has opened up a three game lead on the Cubbies in the NL Central.
- Houston is +146 in run differential, but they are tied with of Seattle, who is only +16.
- Division leaders are NYY/BOS, Cleveland, Houston, Atlanta, Chicago/Milwaukee, Arizona.
- Current Wild Cards are Seattle & Anaheim in the AL, CHI/MIL loser and Washington in the NL.
- Max Scherzer is up big in Strike outs with 152.
- Scherzer, Cory Kluber, and Luis Servino each have 10 wins.
NBA. This week we come to the hype known as the NBA Draft. This is where teams can’t panic, but absolutely need to hit it out of the park. Phoenix should be fine at #1 assuming they get their big, but the draft really starts at #2 with Sacramento because for once they have so many freaking options, yet given their abysmal history of decision making, you can’t count on them, but I guarantee you that 3, 4, and 5 are all counting on the Kings to screw it up. They have to take the best available athlete or hold out for one hell of an offer. No matter what, that #2 pick controls the draft.
NHL. Congrats to the Washington Capitals for winning the Stanley Cup. While I was semi-thrilled for the Vega$ Golden Knights, I was reminded that the Maloofs are part-owners, so that soured me on them.
NFL. As we drift ever closer to the beginning of Training Camps in July, all seems to be quiet on this front and you know what, I don’t mind at all.
CFL. I don’t know why I enjoy this, but watching the games in June is a good start to Football. Maybe it’s because there’s less non-sense, I don’t know. Though I will say the talking head who told another talking head to quit acting like a little bitch was a very nice touch.
The Good. At the World Cup, you can talk a lot of shit about FIFA in Russia and about Corruption – but damn if Iceland isn’t stealing the show early by tying perennial Soccer Superpower Argentina in their opener. Good on them, and good on the thunder clap!!!
And oh by the way, congratulations to Mexico for punking Germany, and did Switzerland actually go out and tie Brazil? Wow!!!
The Bad. So everybody is taking a dump on Phil Mickelson for something that’s effectively nothing? With absolutely no chance of winning the U. S. Open, he pulled a real-life Happy Gilmore by tapping his putt while the ball was still moving. Holy shit, you would have thought he was the most brutal person in the world, and the reaction is even worse. Are you kidding me? Demands for withdrawing from the tourney? So he played the rules – big deal.
The Ugly. Kellen Winslow, Jr.. Oh man. I sure hope that stuff ain’t true.
The You Gotta be shi**ing me. Seriously, is there a guiltier league for “tampering” by the media than the NBA? Good Lord, no sooner did the word get out about Kawhi Leonard then they are all jumping on the Kawhi to Lakerland bandwagon. Jesus, it’s so pathetic – this absolute addiction to the Lakers having to be back on top or at the very least being relevant.
A very fair question that I saw, if Kawhi Leonard wasn’t happy in San Antonio, how the hell is he going to be happy anywhere else?
San Antonio I love you, but if you trade Kawhi to the Lakers I’m gonna be pissed.
A bonus “You gotta be shi**ing me. Golden State running smack is pretty damn stupid if you ask me, and Draymond Green running it at LeBron is just plain stupid. Yes, they are the best, but isn’t that because they’re stacked and nobody else has four all-stars on their team? They’ve proven there is NOBODY out there that can beat them – NOW, and they’ve now proven TEAM (Assembled correctly) beats one superstar. But pride come before the fall, and y’all can only go down from here.
Jerry’s final thought. June is a nice month, the warmth is now kicked in. But sports takes a bit of a backseat – or so many people think or want to say. But might I add, there is a sport going on right about now – it’s called Baseball, and I would suggest that folks check it out.
Look, I’m the last person to tell anybody what to think or do, but I ask you this: do me a favor and take (not watch on TV) a game. I don’t care if it’s in Stankee Stadium, a Triple A Stadium, or even if it’s AA, single-A, developmental, or even the College World Series in Omaha. Go out and make it a day or a night and just enjoy. It’s a simple pleasure, but as I learned last year by my visit to Cooperstown when I watched Wounded Warriors play, it’s still fun.
If Baseball isn’t your thing – hit the outdoors. Go camping, hiking, canoeing, or whatever floats your proverbial boat. Enjoy this.
Take care, and I’ll try to drop you a line next week.
